What is the course about?
This short course provides you with an opportunity to continue to gain basic skills and techniques, enabling you to progress on to accredited courses.
The next steps course is aimed at adults aged 19 and over who have an interest in learning skills and techniques to produce their own hand built small ceramics. Ideally you will have attended the beginner’s course, but if you have some basic knowledge you are able to enrol.
This course will help develop your skills, knowledge, and behaviours in the ceramics area and is suitable for students wishing to advance their creative skills.
Why should I choose the course?
If you enjoy being creative and would like to take your ceramics skills to the next level, this course is ideal for you! Building upon your existing knowledge, this exciting course will give you the skills you need to produce unique small ceramics.
What will I learn?
During the course you will continue to learn through watching demonstrations, but will work more independently. You will be making small items using hand-built techniques including:
- Preparing clay to work with
- Making items using a range of hand build techniques for example coil and slab building
- Designing your own templates to produce coil items
- Using plaster moulds for coil made items
- Using glazing and finishing techniques to protect and enhance your design
- Learning kiln room management and preparing items for firing.
The course is held in the college’s excellent art facilities which include electric wheels, kilns, and a glaze room.
All materials are provided.
Please note, only items produced at the college during the course will be fired in the kilns.

What will the course lead on to?
After completing this course, you could progress on to the Level 1 Creative Crafts (Ceramics) and Level 2 Creative Crafts (Ceramics) courses to develop your skills further.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required and a welfare team that are on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
You are required to have an interest in the subject area, be willing to partake in classroom activities and discussions and to self-assess your weekly progress using an individual learning plan at the end of each session. No previous qualifications are necessary to enter this course, however ideally you will have completed the introduction course or have a basic knowledge of ceramics.
What are my funding options?

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
The use of clay and glazes and the kiln are included in the course fee. Your tutor will advise if you are required to purchase any items to enhance your work. Please make sure to bring an apron, a hand towel for drying your hands, and some paper towels. Please also wear suitable shoes/boots - open toed shoes are not permitted.
