What is the course about?
This short part-time ceramics course is designed for learners aged 19+ who are ready to build on their basic ceramics knowledge. Whether you’ve already completed the Introduction to Ceramics course or have some prior experience, this course will help you further develop your hand-building techniques and expand your creative confidence.
You’ll continue to explore the core skills, techniques, and behaviours needed to create small, hand-built ceramic pieces, preparing you for future progression to accredited courses.

If you enjoy being creative and want to take your ceramics skills to the next level, this hands-on course offers a supportive space to grow. With expert tutor guidance, you’ll build on your existing knowledge, experiment with new techniques, and produce unique ceramic pieces that reflect your style and imagination.
What will I learn?
During the course you will continue to learn through watching demonstrations, but will work more independently. You will be making small items using hand-built techniques including:
- Preparing clay to work with
- Making items using a range of hand build techniques for example coil and slab building
- Designing your own templates to produce coil items
- Using plaster moulds for coil made items
- Using glazing and finishing techniques to protect and enhance your design
- Learning kiln room management and preparing items for firing.
The course is held in the college’s excellent art facilities which include electric wheels, kilns, and a glaze room.
All materials are provided.Â
Please note, only items produced at the college during the course will be fired in the kilns.

After completing this course, you may wish to further your studies by progressing onto an accredited qualification, such as:

What are the entry requirements?
This course is open to adults aged 19 and over who have an interest in ceramics and a willingness to participate in practical work and group discussions.
You’ll be asked to self-assess your weekly progress using an individual learning plan. While no previous qualifications are required, it is recommended that you have completed the beginner’s course or have a basic understanding of ceramics.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
All essential materials—including clay, glazes, and kiln use—are included in your course fee.
Please bring the following to each session:
- An apron
- A hand towel and paper towels
- Closed-toe shoes or boots (open-toed footwear is not permitted)
Your tutor may recommend optional tools or materials to enhance your creative work.
