What is the course about?
This introductory craft and design course is tailored specifically for adults who want to explore their creativity in a supportive and hands-on environment. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with a range of materials and techniques across various craft and design disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, stained glass, and ceramic figurative sculpture.
As part of your learning journey, you’ll explore the work of different artists and learn how they develop ideas around personally chosen themes. This insight will help you generate and refine your own creative concepts. Throughout the course, you'll create, present, and review your own artworks, building both skills and confidence as a developing artist.
Why should I choose the course?
If you have an interest in art and design and would like to gain a formally recognised qualification, then this course is perfect for you. We have an extremely well-established art department at Warrington & Vale Royal College, with highly experienced and specialised teaching staff. We welcome all students who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more in a friendly and welcoming learning environment.
What will I learn?
You’ll be introduced to a wide range of materials, processes, and techniques, starting with observational drawing and the exploration of form and tone through various media. This includes sketchbook work and research tasks designed to develop sensitivity to both subject matter and materials.
As the course progresses, you’ll explore 3D materials such as stained glass, ceramics, and copper, alongside a variety of printmaking and mark-making techniques. You’ll also be introduced to both historical and contemporary artists, helping to inform and inspire your own creative practice.
The course is delivered primarily through practical, workshop-based sessions, supported by regular demonstrations and one-to-one support.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion of this course, you can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft or Art and Design to further your skills.
Are there any links with industry and university?
We regularly have guest speakers and practicing artists who deliver talks to our students. We also run a range of local and national trips to various galleries and museums. We work closely with external agencies and employers to develop ‘live briefs’ which allow our students to explore real life projects. Recent projects have allowed students to work with culture Warrington, Warrington Museum, Lion Salt Works, and Blakemere Craft Centre.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Wellbeing Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
