Technical

At Warrington’s leading provider of technical education, we’ll help you build the skills employers are looking for and set you up for your next step - whether that’s landing a job, heading to university, or starting an apprenticeship.

What is a technical course?

Technical courses are focused on hands-on training for a specific trade or industry.

They are an excellent choice for those who prefer a practical approach to learning, as they focus on applied learning and take a strong career-oriented approach to support students in reaching their next steps.

If you enjoy spending time outside the traditional classroom setting or consider yourself a practical or kinaesthetic learner, technical courses are a perfect post-16 pathway for you!

At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we truly believe we have a course for everyone. We offer an extensive range of technical courses, from entry level through to A-Level-equivalent level 3 qualifications, as well as a wide selection of Higher Education courses starting at level 4.

When you study a technical course with us, you’ll focus on one main subject, giving you the opportunity to fully explore what you’re passionate about and develop the skills needed for your future career. For those who haven’t yet achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English and/or maths, we’ll support you to resit these alongside your main studies.

From health & social care courses, construction, sport, to travel & tourism, our broad range of courses will set you up perfectly for a future in your chosen field.

Emma Farrington

Previous school: Sir Thomas Boteler
College course: Level 3 Brickwork

Emma first chose to study Brickwork at Warrington & Vale Royal College because she was unsure which career path she wanted to pursue but felt that learning a trade would open up a range of opportunities. Having never enjoyed a traditional classroom environment, she was keen to take a more hands-on approach to learning.

During her time at college, Emma particularly valued the support of her tutors, who made her feel like part of a family and helped her build confidence in her abilities. She also enjoyed gaining real-world experience through on-site industry placement, giving her a greater understanding of how the sector operates.

"I would definitely recommend a brickwork course at Warrington & Vale Royal College. It's been the best two years of my life. The tutors really care about you, make you feel seen, and helped me find a career path I hadn't previously considered."

Madeline Kelly

Previous school: Beamont Collegiate Academy
College course: Level 3 Military & Emergency Services

Madeline chose to study Military and Emergency Services because it aligned perfectly with her career ambitions of becoming either an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a Paramedic. Since joining the college, she has particularly enjoyed the practical aspects of the course, including the variety of trips, which have made her learning experience both engaging and informative.

“This course has shown me the value of the emergency services in today’s society. Throughout my studies, I have felt well supported by my tutors, who always encourage me to aim high and reach my full potential.”

Euan Kemp

Previous school: Byrchall High School
College course: Level 3 Graphic Design & Illustration

While at the college, Euan has been involved in a range of live briefs, from logo design to social media campaigns, helping him to develop strong foundational skills and techniques essential for a career in graphic design. The course also enabled him to explore his own creative style, identifying personal favourite projects and software along the way.

Now having been offered a place at the University of Portsmouth, Euan is grateful for the opportunities that completing a level 3 qualification has provided.

“My course was really rewarding and I can still access higher education just as I could have if I'd chosen an A-level route. But my course had the added benefit of having tonnes of industry experience, too! Now, I feel very confident in my abilities, and I am ready to face new challenges in higher education.”
