Employing an apprentice: FAQs

Check out some of the most commonly asked questions below to help you learn more about employing an apprentice. If your question isn't on this list, please contact the team who will be happy to help!

How much does it cost to hire an apprentice?

The cost of employing an apprentice depends on the size of your organisation. For small to medium enterprises (SMEs), employing an apprentice is highly cost-effective as training is fully funded for apprentices aged under 22, and for those aged over 22, employers contribute just 5% of the training band.

Levy-paying employers pay the full cost of training, with prices varying by apprenticeship standard, and must also pay apprentice wages. All employers are required to pay wages, but apprentices are typically more affordable than fully qualified staff.

If your apprentice is under 25, you won’t pay National Insurance contributions – saving up to £3,000 per apprentice per year.

How do I hire an apprentice?

To employ an apprentice and access government funding, you’ll need an Apprenticeship Service employer account, which allows you to manage funding, training, and your provider relationship.

You can advertise vacancies through the national apprenticeship website and other recruitment platforms or employ an apprentice who already works for you by upskilling an existing staff member.

As a college, we can support your recruitment by sharing vacancies with our students, as well as sharing CVs from our own students who are actively seeking an apprenticeship. We can also assist you with interview setup.

Look out for our Find Your Match events which take place at multiple times during the year, where you are invited to college to meet and interview candidates, helping you to employ an apprentice.

Who can employ an apprentice?

Any employer in England – from small businesses to large organisations – can employ an apprentice, so long as they can offer genuine employment, appropriate supervision, and be prepared to support formal training.

Self-employed people can also hire an apprentice if they become a legally recognised employer and meet standard employment responsibilities.

What will my business gain from employing an apprentice?

Employing an apprentice allows you to develop talent with the exact skills your business needs, reducing recruitment costs and skills gaps. Apprenticeships help build role-specific capabilities and enable you to shape future supervisors, managers, and specialists.

Apprentices often bring new ideas, energy, and up-to-date training, boosting productivity across teams. They are also more affordable than fully qualified staff, making them a sensible choice to support your organisation.
