What is the course about?
This is an introductory art and design course aimed specifically at adults. You will be encouraged to explore a variety of craft resources by experimenting with different materials and techniques across a range of art and design discipline areas. These will include drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles, and photography. You will learn about different artists and how they generate ideas based around personally selected themes, using this knowledge to inform your own ideas. As the course progresses you will create, present, and review your own artworks.
Why should I choose the course?
If you have an interest in art and design and would like to gain a formally recognised qualification, then this course is perfect for you. We have an extremely well-established art department at Warrington & Vale Royal College, with highly experienced and specialised teaching staff. We welcome all students who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more in a friendly and welcoming learning environment.
What will I learn?
You will be introduced to a wide range of materials, processes, and techniques including drawing techniques using a pencil, graphite, charcoal, and pastels. You will also learn about watercolour and acrylic painting, a variety of printmaking techniques, sculpture, textiles, and photographic techniques. You will be introduced to a variety of historical and more contemporary artists, which will help to inform and inspire your own work. Delivery of the course is predominantly workshop based, with regular demonstrations and one-to-one support.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion of this course, you can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft / Art and Design to further your skills.
Are there any links with industry and university?
We regularly have guest speakers and practicing artists who deliver talks to our students. We also run a range of local and national trips to various galleries and museums. We work closely with external agencies and employers to develop ‘live briefs’ which allow our students to explore real life projects. Recent projects have allowed students to work with culture Warrington, Warrington Museum, Lion Salt Works, and Blakemere Craft Centre.
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
