Careers Information for Parents

Where a qualification becomes a career

As a parent or carer you are one of the most influential people in your child’s life and in the best possible position to support your child as they consider their future, review options and make choices.

We realise it can be challenging to know how to ask the right questions. You may want to start with their interests, skills, abilities, values, and knowledge of the world of work. There are organisations who offer advice and support to parents at various stages of your child’s career pathway, including the Careers Team based in college.

Helping your child to choose a career using Labour Market Information (LMI)

There is a lot to consider when choosing a career. What does the job involve? Does it suit your skills? How much will you earn? How many jobs will there be in the future?

Labour Market Information provides you with information about both our local area and the UK as a whole. An awareness of labour market information can help provide you with the information required to help your child make a realistic decision based on:

  • Job availability
  • Unemployment rates
  • Skills gaps
  • Growth sectors
  • Hours of work
  • Wage rates.

You will find valuable labour market information and career options at the end of every course page on our website.

Our Careers Leader, Fionnula (Finn), was awarded 'Teacher or Adviser of the Year' by Higher Horizons in 2023, in recognition of her hard work and dedication to her role.

She says: “It’s lovely to be recognised as Adviser of the Year by Higher Horizons and the Chester Hub. There is a lot of work that goes into the organisation of the ‘core programme’ to ensure it runs smoothly and that our level 3 students have access to the required information to make an informed decision about Higher Education.”
