What is the course about?
This part-time level 3 course builds on your creative experience and focuses on developing skills and competence across a variety of specialist ceramic projects, including hand building, coiling, throwing, casting, glazing, firing, and using gas and electric kilns. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence and expertise to work independently as a designer and maker of ceramics.
As a natural progression from level 1 and 2 ceramics courses, this programme allows you to extend your skills and knowledge. Upon completion, you will be well-equipped to work professionally within ceramics or to continue your studies at a higher level.
Why should I choose the course?
You should choose this course if you want to deepen your creative skills and specialise in a wide range of ceramic techniques. It offers hands-on experience with advanced processes like throwing, casting, glazing, and kiln firing, preparing you to work confidently and independently as a professional ceramic artist or maker.
Designed as a progression from levels 1 and 2, it provides the perfect opportunity to build on your existing knowledge and take your ceramics practice to a higher level. Whether your goal is to enter the industry or continue your education, this course equips you with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to succeed.
What will I learn?
This course offers a hands-on experience working directly with clay across a wide range of ceramics disciplines. You will use a full variety of materials and equipment related to ceramics.
You will develop essential skills in preparation, handling, research, design, and making, alongside understanding important health and safety practices.
The course is workshop-based and highly practical, with regular one-to-one support to help you progress.
Throughout your studies, you will work with industry-standard equipment and learn key processes such as glazing, firing, and how to manage your work independently.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion, you will have the skills needed to work independently as a designer and maker within ceramics. You can also choose to continue your studies at a higher level, either at this college or with an external provider. This course provides an excellent foundation for progression to advanced qualifications in ceramics or related creative fields.
Are there any links with industry and university?
There are strong links with industry through our artist in residence programme, which involves professional artists working alongside our students and sharing their experience and skills. Educational day trips to galleries and exhibitions are organised as part of the course to keep abreast of ceramic trends and developments. These trips also enable you to carry out artist research, which reinforces an awareness of the diverse nature of the medium and helps with idea generation.Â
What support is available?
We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Wellbeing Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

Why should I choose to study the course at Warrington & Vale Royal College?
Warrington & Vale Royal College has professional standard ceramic studios which contain the necessary equipment, machinery, and materials to teach ceramics to a high level. The college’s tutors have a great deal of passion for art as well as valuable industry experience. The aim of the ceramics department is to provide students with the opportunity to cover the full range of diverse activities, skills, and techniques within ceramics. Learning is conducted in a creative, inclusive, and friendly environment, where ideas are shared and enthusiasm encouraged.
What are the entry requirements?
The course is aimed primarily at those who are progressing from the level 1 and level 2 ceramics courses. However, there is an option to progress directly onto the level 3 course for applicants with considerable past experience of art and design/ceramics. If this is the case, applicants will be required to show a portfolio or sketchbook of artwork at interview, where the necessary creative experience can be established to allow progression on to this level 3 course.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
Students will be required to make an £80 contribution towards the cost of the ceramic materials used on the course. All other necessary equipment is provided as part of the course, although students are encouraged to build up their own personal hand tools for making. Advice and guidance on personal hand tools will be provided once the course starts.
