What is the course about?
The next steps course for adults continues to develop craft skills and design techniques. You will continue to explore stained glass, printing, drawing, and ceramic figurative modelling, while developing creative ideas and design processes. The emphasis is on both technical skill-building and personal artistic expression.

If you have an interest in craft and design and have completed the Introduction to Design Crafts course, then this course is perfect for you. We have a well-established art department at Warrington & Vale Royal College, with highly experienced and specialised teaching staff. We welcome all students who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more in a friendly and welcoming learning environment.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Gain confidence in using a variety of craft materials and tools
- Understand key design principles (composition, balance, colour, texture)
- Develop original design ideas through sketchbooks and experimentation
- Produce finished craft pieces in stained glass, print, and ceramics
- Build a portfolio showcasing their creative journey.
Skills and techniques covered:
Stained Glass
- Cutting, assembling, and soldering glass pieces
- Exploring colour, light, and pattern in design
Printing
- Lino cut and print techniques
- Experimenting with textures and layering
Drawing
- Tessellation, designing patterns
- Using mixed media to develop design ideas
Ceramic Figurative Modelling
- Hand-building and sculpting techniques
- Exploring form, proportion, and surface decoration.
What will the course lead on to?
The course could lead to more advanced part-time art courses including Advanced Art and Design.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course but an interest in art and design is essential.
