What is the course about?
The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route at Warrington & Vale Royal College is designed for practising electricians currently working in the industry who wish to achieve industry-recognised qualified status.
It is suitable for experienced workers who can demonstrate full occupational competence across the electrotechnical scope of work, but who have not completed an apprenticeship or equivalent Level 3 qualification.
All applicants will complete an initial eligibility assessment (skills scan) in line with The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) requirements.
Where applicants cannot evidence sufficient underpinning knowledge (typically Level 2), they may be required to complete the TESP Entry Test.
- Non-regulated assessment
- Not a qualification
- Used for entry screening only
Applicants must provide evidence of their experience, including employment history, current role, qualifications, and work across installation, maintenance, inspection, and testing.
Successful applicants will progress onto the Level 3 Experienced Worker qualification, which is mapped to National Occupational Standards and assessed through workplace evidence, professional discussion, and practical assessment.
Why should I choose the course?
This route allows experienced electricians to gain formal recognition of their skills without completing a full apprenticeship.
You will receive structured support to meet eligibility requirements, build your portfolio, and demonstrate competence in line with industry standards.
Successful completion supports progression to final industry assessment and recognition as a fully qualified electrician, improving career opportunities and access to JIB grading.
What will I learn?
You will demonstrate knowledge and competence across:
- Electrical installation
- Inspection and testing
- Fault finding
- BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
- Health and safety
Assessment is based on real workplace evidence, supported by professional discussion, practical evaluation, and one-to-one guidance where required. Assessment may take place in the workplace and through remote support methods.
As part of the overall requirements for completion of the Experienced Worker route and progression to final assessment, learners must hold or achieve:
- BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition)
- Level 3 Initial Verification of Electrical Installations
These may be completed prior to or alongside the Experienced Worker qualification where required.
What will the course lead on to?
After completing the Level 3 qualification, you can progress to:
- AM2E
- AM2ED
As required by National Electrotechnical Training (NET), these can only be taken after the qualification is achieved.
This route supports progression towards application for the ECS Gold Card, subject to meeting all industry requirements, and enables recognition as a qualified electrician within the electrotechnical industry.

A current job role that allows evidence to be gathered across installation, maintenance, inspection, and testing
Ability to provide verifiable evidence of work undertaken in a real working environment
Applicants must also:
- Complete an initial eligibility assessment (skills scan)
- Provide supporting evidence, including employment history, qualifications, and details of industry experience
Applicants are expected to have knowledge and understanding comparable to a Level 3 electrotechnical qualification. This will be confirmed through the eligibility assessment (skills scan). Where this cannot be evidenced through existing qualifications, applicants may be required to complete the TESP Entry Test to confirm readiness for the Level 3 qualification.
This qualification is not suitable for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, apprentices, or those who have recently completed an electrotechnical qualification without sufficient industry experience.
