What is the course about?
The broad purpose of this occupation is to set out and lay bricks, blocks, brick specials, and other materials to construct and repair complex masonry structures. These can include features such as chimneys, angled or curved walls, and decorative brickwork.
Craft bricklayers are responsible for planning and organising the work site, not only for themselves but also for others on their team. They play a key role in ensuring that the site runs efficiently and safely.
In this role, you’ll act as a technical expert within your team. You’ll provide direction, offer advice on the best approach to tasks, and help solve problems that arise during construction.
You’ll also be responsible for ensuring the masonry work is completed to specification, delivered on time, and carried out in a safe and sustainable manner.
Craft bricklayers typically work outdoors, often at height and in a variety of weather conditions.
Why should I choose the course?
This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals ready to take the next step after completing the Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard. It offers the opportunity to deepen your expertise in specialist brickwork techniques, including advanced decorative work, while also developing key skills in leadership and site management within the construction industry.
What will I learn?
As a craft bricklayer apprentice, you’ll take on a range of responsibilities that build your technical skills and leadership abilities. Your duties will include:
Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Duty 1: Work in compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements to ensure the wellbeing of yourself and others.
- Duty 2: Ensure all work meets current building regulations and quality standards, and check the work of others where appropriate.
Leadership and Teamwork
- Duty 3: Lead the bricklaying team in delivering the construction programme, interpreting technical specifications, manufacturers' instructions, and drawings—including digital plans.
- Duty 7: Work effectively on your own and supervise others on-site.
Planning and Site Organisation
- Duty 4: Plan and organise the work site, setting out materials and tools for yourself and your team.
- Duty 5: Plan tasks to achieve optimal environmental performance, quality, and project timelines.
Construction Skills and Technical Delivery
- Duty 6: Construct complex masonry structures that meet industry standards and specifications.
- Duty 11: Repair, modify, maintain, or replace a variety of masonry types as needed.
Workplace Standards and Collaboration
- Duty 8: Keep the site clear, safe, and organised, promoting sustainable building practices.
- Duty 10: Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and other trades on programming and technical issues.
Professional Growth
- Duty 9: Continue your professional development by staying updated on industry changes and sharing knowledge with your team.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
The Level 3 Craft Bricklayer apprenticeship typically takes 18 months to complete, followed by a 3-month End Point Assessment (EPA) period. However, the overall duration may vary depending on your existing knowledge, skills, and experience.
The apprenticeship is delivered through a day release model, where you will attend college one day per week for 36 weeks. The rest of your time will be spent working with your employer on-site.
During the practical period, you’ll take part in a mix of classroom-based learning and hands-on practical activities, helping you develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to successfully complete your End Point Assessment.
youWhat will the course lead on to?
