What is the course about?

With the housing market continuing to grow, bricklaying apprentices are in high demand. As a bricklaying apprentice, you will gain an excellent insight into the construction sector and take on a variety of practical tasks. During your apprenticeship you will lay bricks, blocks, and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches. The tasks you carry out during your apprenticeship will prepare you for full-time employment and a successful career in this sector. Upon completing your apprenticeship, you will be able to confidently carry out the full range of duties to the standard set by the industry.

Why should I choose the course?

As a bricklayer you will gain a varied scope of knowledge of how the construction industry works. Bricklayers are very much in demand and as a result can earn high salaries. As a bricklayer you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and do something different every day. You will carry out jobs to a high standard, giving you a sense of accomplishment after each task is completed.

What will I learn?

To become a competent bricklayer, you will learn how to lay bricks, blocks, and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, partitions and arches, foundations, and other structures such as chimney stacks. Depending on your job role, you may also take part in restoration projects, refurbishing brickwork and masonry. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on can include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions, and restorations. As a brickwork apprentice you may work with one other person or in a bricklaying group. For some larger jobs, you will work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying groups, as well as people from other trades.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

The apprenticeship is delivered over 24 months, and you will be fully supported by the college every step of the way. During your apprenticeship you will attend college one day per week, with the other four days spent with your employer. As an apprentice you will be allocated a tutor and an assessor, who will come out to visit you onsite.

What will the course lead on to?

The construction industry has a huge range of career opportunities. After becoming a qualified tradesperson, you could pursue a range of career paths, from site management to owning your own business. You may also wish to take your studies further and complete the HNC in Construction & the Built Environment. For more information and advice, contact our Learner Services Team on 01925 494400 or learner.services@wvr.ac.uk.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
