Course Type

Apprenticeship

What is the course about?

With the housing market continuing to grow, skilled bricklayers are in high demand.

As a bricklaying apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the construction sector and develop a wide range of practical skills. You’ll learn how to lay bricks, blocks, and other building materials in mortar to build and repair walls, foundations, partitions, and arches.

The tasks you complete throughout your apprenticeship will prepare you for full-time employment and a long-term, successful career in construction. By the end of the course, you'll be fully equipped to carry out all the core duties of a bricklayer to industry standards.

Why should I choose the course?

Bricklaying offers a varied and rewarding career in a thriving industry.

You'll gain broad knowledge of how the construction industry works, and your skills will be in high demand—leading to strong earning potential.

As a bricklayer, no two days are the same! You’ll work on different projects and complete tasks that give a real sense of achievement. From start to finish, you'll take pride in completing jobs to a high standard.

What will I learn?

You’ll develop the core skills needed to become a confident, competent bricklayer.

This includes learning how to:

  • Lay bricks, blocks, and other materials in mortar
  • Construct and repair walls, arches, partitions, and foundations
  • Work on structures like chimney stacks

Depending on your role, you may also get involved in restoration projects, refurbishing brickwork and masonry.

You’ll work on a variety of sites—from large commercial builds and new housing developments to home extensions and historical restorations.

Bricklayers often work in small teams or pairs. On larger sites, you might focus on one section of a building alongside other bricklayers and tradespeople.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

The apprenticeship is delivered over 24 months, and you will be fully supported by the college every step of the way. During your apprenticeship you will attend college one day per week, with the other four days spent with your employer. As an apprentice you will be allocated a tutor and an assessor, who will come out to visit you onsite.

What will the course lead on to?

The construction industry offers a wide range of exciting career options.

Once you’re qualified, you could explore roles such as:

  • Site management
  • Self-employment or running your own business

You may also choose to progress onto further study, such as our HNC Construction Management (HTQ) course.

For personalised advice, contact our Learner Services Team on 01925 494400 or learner.services@wvr.ac.uk.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
