What is the course about?
This apprenticeship is your gateway into a skilled trade that’s essential to the construction industry.
As a site carpenter, you’ll work mainly with timber products—shaping, preparing, and installing components used in buildings.
You could find yourself:
- Working on construction sites or within homes and commercial properties
- Assisting with the initial stages of new builds
- Installing fixtures and fittings
- Carrying out repairs and maintenance
As a carpentry & joinery apprentice, you’ll build both the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to work confidently and competently in the trade.

What will I learn?
Upon completion of this apprenticeship, you will have acquired the occupational skills to be able to:
- Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing
- Install door and window frames, door and hatch linings, floor joist coverings, straight partitions and straight staircases
- Install doors, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units and fitments, cladding and staircase components
- Erect inclined roofs with gables, joists, roof coverings and roof components
- Repair or replace frames, mouldings, doors, windows, door and window ironmongery, roofing components, guttering and downpipes, and window components
- Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
The apprenticeship is delivered over 24 months, and you will be fully supported by the college every step of the way. During your apprenticeship you will attend college one day per week, with the other four days spent with your employer. As an apprentice you will be allocated a tutor and an assessor, who will come out to visit you onsite.
What will the course lead on to?
The construction industry has a huge range of career opportunities. After becoming a qualified tradesperson, you could pursue a range of career paths, from site management to owning your own business. You may also wish to take your studies further and progress on to the level 3 apprenticeship. You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?
To join this apprenticeship, you’ll need:
- GCSE grades 9–4 in English and maths, or
- Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths
We may consider applicants who need to resit either English or maths. However, if you need to resit both subjects, you will not meet the entry requirements for this programme.
If you're required to resit one subject, you’ll be invited to complete an initial assessment. If you're assessed as suitable, you must be willing to achieve your Level 2 qualification in English or maths before completing the apprenticeship, as part of your course.
