What is the course about?

HNC Construction Management for England opens up an exciting world of opportunity, empowering you for the future. It’s ideal if you’re seeking a career in the construction industry or wish to progress to complete the second year of the degree or degree apprenticeship. If you’re already working in the construction industry, you can use this HNC to upskill or retrain, acquiring valuable experience and gaining vital new skills to support your career progression.

The course will develop your knowledge, skills, and understanding of the construction industry. This includes problem solving, design, planning, and building.

You will achieve a Level 4 HNC Construction Management for England.

The programme can be studied part-time over 2 years (attending college one day per week)

Whether you're starting out or upskilling, the HNC offers a solid foundation for a wide range of construction-related careers or further academic progression.

This course is ideal for those seeking a career in construction management, wanting to gain professional recognition, and aiming to boost employability within a growing industry.

What will I learn?

During the course you will develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:

In Year 1:

  • The Construction Environment
  • Construction Technology
  • Legal and Statutory Requirements in Construction
  • Surveying, Measuring & Setting-out

In Year 2:

  • Construction Design Project (Pearson-set)
  • Digital Applications for Building Information Modelling
  • Financial Management & Business Practices in Construction
  • Supervision & Operations

Units will be assessed using a variety of methods including, projects, portfolios, presentations, case studies, reports, and a research project. Alternative assessment methods may be used where appropriate.

We do not guarantee that a non-mandatory unit will always run in any given academic year as options may be dependent on student numbers, sector requirements, and staff expertise.

What will the course lead on to?

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in Construction, Vendor Accredited Certification, and Professional Body membership, upon which students can build, should they decide to continue their studies beyond the certificate stage.

You can progress on to an HND in construction or the first or second year of a related university degree course. The typical student who chooses this course usually aspires to be an:

  • Architect
  • Mechanical/ Electrical Designer.
  • Project Manager.
  • Quantity Surveyor.
  • Site Manager/ Supervisor.
  • Health & Safety Manager.
  • Estimator.
  • Engineer.

Typical student destinations include progression to The University of Salford & Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to study their chosen path in the Construction such as a BSc Hons in Quantity Surveying, BSc Hons in Project Management, or BSc Hons in Construction Management, and much more.

Are there any links with industry and university?

The HNC Construction Management for England is a higher education course that enhances employability outcomes. It is an excellent choice if you are looking to boost your employability skills and will provide you with a direct route into a career in the construction industry.

To inform the curriculum design, tutors have strong working relationships with a construction based steering group making sure that course content is relevant and current. Furthermore, the construction team at Warrington & Vale Royal college have strong connections to both local and nationwide employers such as Caddick Construction (NW) Ltd, MJS Engineering Consultants Ltd, SN Estimation Services Ltd, and Byrne Civil Solutions.

What support is available?

All higher education students receive termly one-to-one tutorials with their programme leader to support them with their progress. You will also have access to an online tutorial programme, Amplify, which provides guidance on a wide range of topics such as mental health, managing finances, support for single parents, and working online. In addition, you can access a programme of workshops throughout the year to support with topics such as study skills, academic writing, and time management.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required, and a Wellbeing Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support, and help when needed. All HE students have access to a designated progress coach who can also provide welfare support.

Why should I choose to study the course at Warrington & Vale Royal College?

As a HNC Construction Management student, you will study in our brand-new Construction & Civil Engineering Academy (CCEA), providing you with access to all of the latest construction technologies. We have highly experienced staff who will support you as you develop the essential skills needed to flourish in future progression opportunities.

Studying HNC Construction Management provides access to higher level education, such as the completion of a degree or undertaking a higher level apprenticeship, and is typically timetabled over two days per week to provide flexibility undertaking work experience and managing employment commitments. It is expected that students will complete work outside of the classroom for assignments an independent research.  

What are the entry requirements?

You will typically have one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 3 or other Level 3 qualification in a related subject, with a minimum grade of MPP or MM
  • A T Level with an overall grade of Pass
  • A minimum of two A-Levels (A2), with one in a related subject at grade C or above
  • Access to HE with relevant options.

AND

  • GCSE English (Language or Literature): A to C* or 9 to 4
  • GCSE Maths: A to C* or 9 to 4.

 

For Non-Native English Speakers

If you have not completed your final two years of schooling in English, you must demonstrate English language capability at a level equivalent to the following before joining the programme (which is taught and assessed in English):

  • CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level B2
  • IELTS 5.5, with reading and writing scores of 5.5 or above.

 

Additional Information

We welcome applications from mature students who have:

Relevant work experience in a related sector or role Professional qualifications in a related industry.

Completion of a personal statement is required before an admissions interview is offered.

You must provide a reference from one of the following:

  • A previous course leader or teacher (if progressing from a recent further or higher education course)
  • A recent or current employer
  • An appropriate professional who can provide a character reference (if you have not been in recent education or employment).

The college provides all students with £3 print credit - any further printing will incur a cost.

Students would benefit from having access to a personal computer and will need broadband access with a reliable connection.
