What is the course about?
This qualification is for candidates that have completed the Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating and are in employment/self-employed in the Building Services Sector of the Construction Industry. You must have a qualified plumber working with you to sign off your competence.
The broad purpose of the qualification is designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to work effectively as a plumber. It covers various aspects of plumbing and heating systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair.
This course is delivered over a 12-month period (but can be completed earlier than this)
You will attend the following sessions face to face sessions held at the Warrington campus:
One face to face session, supported by online resources to complete the level 2 theoretic unit - Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering. This unit is completed by an online multiple-choice exam. Learners will be booked in to sit the exam once deemed ready.
Three face to face sessions to guide and support you through your portfolio with targets set as appropriate. These dates will be spread throughout the year and held face to face at the Warrington campus.
You will also have five direct observations in the workplace to cover a range of preparations, installations, sound tests, decommissioning and maintenance activities to complete your NVQ portfolio. You must have a qualified plumber working with you to sign off your competence.
*If you do not complete the qualification within the 12-month period, and the 5 workplace observations, additional costs may be incurred at £100 per workplace observation.

- Interpreting Technical Drawings: Reading and interpreting technical drawings, diagrams, and specifications related to plumbing and heating systems, understanding symbols, measurements, and annotations.
- Pipe Installation: Learning how to install various types of pipes, including copper, plastic, and steel, using appropriate jointing methods such as soldering, compression fittings, and solvent welding.
- Fixtures and Fittings: Installing and maintaining plumbing fixtures and fittings, including sinks, toilets, showers, baths, taps, valves, and drains.
- Heating Systems: Understanding different types of heating systems, including central heating boilers, radiators, underfloor heating, and renewable energy systems such as solar thermal and heat pumps.
- Controls and Regulations: Understanding heating controls, thermostats, timers, and programmers, as well as compliance with relevant building regulations and industry standards.
- Fault Finding and Repair: Developing skills in diagnosing and rectifying faults in plumbing and heating systems, troubleshooting issues such as leaks, blockages, and heating system malfunctions.
- Customer Service: Developing effective communication and customer service skills to interact professionally with clients, assess their needs, and provide appropriate solutions.

A sustained career in the building services sector with the opportunity to progress on to higher level apprenticeships, such as the following;
- Gain employment as a qualified plumber (Inc site work with a CSCS card)
- Level 3 Plumbing and Heating Technician Standard
- Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician Standard
What support is available?
You will be allocated a designated assessor to guide you through your course. We also have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required and a welfare team that are on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
What are the entry requirements?
You must hold a minimum of 2 Diploma in Plumbing.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
If you do not complete the qualification within the 12-month period, and the 5 workplace observations, additional costs may be incurred at £100 per workplace observation.
