What is the course about?

As an electrician, you will be expected to:

  • Work reliably and effectively without close supervision
  • Accept responsibility for the work of yourself and others
  • Accept, allocate, and supervise technical and other tasks
  • Use oral, written, and electronic methods for the communication of technical and other information
  • Work effectively with colleagues, other trades, clients, suppliers, and the public
  • Undertake work in a way that contributes to sustainable development
  • Maintain and enhance competence in own area

Why should I choose the course?

As an installation electrician apprentice, you will train to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial, and domestic environments. Gaining experience carrying out a variety of tasks, you will work on the installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of low voltage electrical and electronic devices and appliances. You will work with a range of different equipment and electrical systems such as fire alarms, heating, cables, fuses, lighting, switchboards, and renewable energy technologies.

What will I learn?

Throughout this course you will understand and apply:

  • The principles, practices, and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables, and cords in electrical systems
  • The practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment
  • The principles, practices, and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning, and certification of electrotechnical. systems and equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment
  • The principles, practices, and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment
  • The electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems. Oversee and organise the work environment.

Installation electricians must:

  • Understand and apply the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures, and the environment.

Maintenance electricians must:

  • Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.

In all of these activities, electricians must understand and apply health and safety and environmental regulations, guidance notes and relevant codes of practice, and the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

This qualification is assessed in stages. During your on-programme learning stage your employer and assessor coach will assess your knowledge, competencies, and behaviours. You will develop a work-based portfolio, undertake regular reviews, and attend 20% off the job learning at college.

What will the course lead on to?

After completing this course, you can progress on to a HNC or HND in Electrotechnical Installation or Electrotechnical Maintenance. Alternatively, you can progress straight into employment.

You will be allocated a designated apprenticeship coach to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme are GCSE grades 9-4, or level 2 functional skills qualifications in English and maths. We will consider those who need to resit either their English or maths qualification, however those that need to resit both will not meet the entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme.

If you are required to resit either English or maths, you will be invited to undertake an initial assessment. If deemed suitable, you must be willing to achieve your level 2 English/maths qualification before the end of the apprenticeship programme as part of your study.
