What is the course about?
This occupation is found in the Building Services Sector of the Construction Industry.
The broad purpose of the occupation is to plan, select and size, install, commission, service and maintain (including fault finding, diagnosis and repair) zero carbon central heating and hot water systems in buildings including dwellings and industrial and commercial premises.
Zero carbon heat sources may include but are not limited to Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal Collectors.
The occupation includes work on both new build and existing properties and typically involves the installation, service, fault finding and repair of zero carbon heating and hot water appliances, storage vessels, pipework, heat emitters and associated components and their mechanical and electrical control systems.

What will I learn?
In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with customers and end users, and as such requires a high level of customer service. The role is physical in nature and involves the manual handling of heavy equipment, working at height and in confined spaces.
An employee in this occupation will be responsible for working both independently with a minimum of supervision and also as a member of a team involving close liaison and cooperation with site and line management, colleagues and other trades.
Typical duties include:
- Plan low carbon heating and hot water systems to meet customers’ needs and in accordance with manufacturers guidance, regulatory requirements and industry recognised standards and procedures.
- Select and size low carbon heating and hot water systems to meet customers’ needs and in accordance with manufacturers guidance, regulatory requirements and industry recognised standards and procedures.
- Carry out preparatory work for the Installation of low carbon heating and hot water systems
- Install low carbon heating and hot water systems in accordance with design criteria, manufacturers guidance, regulatory requirements and industry recognised standards and procedures
- Test and commission low carbon heating and hot water system installations in accordance with manufacturers guidance, regulatory requirements and industry recognised standards and procedures
- Carry out appropriate handover procedures for low carbon heating and hot water systems to customers and or end users including the provision of written information, diagrammatic information, verbal information and demonstration regarding the systems operation and use
- Carry out routine service and maintenance procedures on low carbon heating and hot water systems
- Perform fault finding, diagnosis and rectificati
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
This apprenticeship is delivered via day release at the Warrington campus and its typical practical period duration will be 36 months with a 6 month End Point Assessment period.
What will the course lead on to?
A sustained career in the building services sector with the opportunity to progress on to higher apprenticeships, such as the level 4 site supervisor standard

You will be allocated a designated apprentice coach to guide you through your apprenticeship. We also have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required and a welfare team that are on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme are GCSE grades 9-4, or level 2 functional skills qualifications in English and maths. We will consider those who need to resit either their English or maths qualification, however those that need to resit both will not meet the entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme.
If you are required to resit either English or maths, you will be invited to undertake an initial assessment. If deemed suitable, you must be willing to achieve your level 2 English/maths qualification before the end of the apprenticeship programme as part of your study.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
16-18 years old is Government funded 19+ the employer will pay a 5% contribution.
