What is the course about?
This course is ideal if you would like to follow a career path in the construction industry as a bricklayer. It will help you to get closer to a career as a professional bricklayer, with a clear understanding of what makes a good tradesman within the construction industry.

This course is ideal if you have an interest in the specialist trade of bricklaying, and are looking to pursue a career in the construction industry as a bricklayer. You will gain an industry recognised qualification from City & Guilds and study in our dedicated Colin Daniels Constructions Centre with well-equipped workshops, carrying a wide range of tools and materials. There’s never been a more exciting time to start a bricklaying career. There is a huge drive to build thousands of new homes each year throughout the UK, so your skills will be in very high demand, and this course will give you the essential skills to break into the industry.
What will I learn?
This wide-ranging course will teach you the skills needed to progress in the building trade. You will learn enhanced techniques such as setting out masonry structures and constructing masonry cladding, constructing solid walling incorporating isolated and attached piers, cavity walling, and how to interpret workshop drawings. All of this is delivered in our specialist construction workshops, and you’ll also have access to well-appointed classrooms and computer facilities to enhance your learning and provide an effective link between the theoretical and practical aspects of the course. You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical assessments, job-related tests and online computer-based exams.
What will the course lead on to?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge to progress onto the Level 3 in Brickwork where you will refine your skills as a more experienced bricklayer, or you could even pursue an apprenticeship. The construction industry is thriving and with hard work and relevant experience, you could soon be working your way up the career ladder to become a construction site supervisor, or even a surveyor. With a government target of 300,000 new homes to be built per year, the earning potential in this industry is incredible.

What support is available?
You will be allocated a Progress Coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and onto your chosen career or progression path. We also have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if it is required and a welfare team that are on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?
Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including maths and/or English, or successful completion of a Level 1 qualification. Students will be expected to continue to study towards a GCSE Grade 4 English & maths if not already achieved.
Irrespective of your GCSE results, most students will start at level 1 and learn basic skills before progressing through the levels.
Are there any additional costs associated with the course?
There may be some additional costs associated with this course, as you will be expected to purchase your own personal protective equipment including safety footwear-no rigger style boots, a polo shirt and work trousers, which are all a mandatory requirement for all our construction courses. There may also be some additional expenditure associated with trips and visits.
