What is the course about?

This course acts as a starting point for those with little or no experience within this field. You will be taught the basics of carpentry and joinery to build your confidence, whilst getting to grips with the skills required to make a first-class tradesperson. You will learn a whole host of skills to help you to construct, install, and repair wooden structures and fittings, including doors and windows.

Why should I choose the course?

This course is ideal if you have an interest in woodwork and are looking to progress within the construction industry as a carpenter or joiner. You will gain an industry recognised qualification from City & Guilds and study in our fully kitted-out workshop, complete with a wide range of tools and equipment. This will provide you with the experience you need to begin your career.

What will I learn?

During this one-year course you will be taught a wide range of fundamental topics by our team of tutors, who are all experienced carpenters and joiners with years of experience and extensive industry knowledge. You will develop your skills and knowledge in this popular trade, covering aspects such as hand-tool sharpening, maintenance and usage, safe handling of power tools, and woodworking joints. You will also become familiar with basic and complex woodworking joints such as dovetails and mortice and tenons. You will learn in our state-of-the-art carpentry and joinery workshop, fully equipped with all the industry-standard tools and equipment needed. You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical assessments, job-related tests and online computer-based exams.

*Irrespective of your GCSE results, all students will start at level 1 and learn basic skills before progressing through the course levels.

What will the course lead on to?

After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge to progress on to the Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery, where you will refine your skills as a more experienced carpenter or joiner. Alternatively, you could pursue an apprenticeship to gain a qualification whilst earning a wage. The construction industry is thriving and with hard work and relevant experience you could soon be working in the practical role you’ve always dreamed of. Whether you decide to eventually work on a construction site, in a workshop, or even start your own business, there will be plenty of career opportunities waiting for you.

Are there any links with industry and university?

This course benefits from excellent employer links with a number of local and national companies such as Vinci Construction, David Wilson Homes, Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey. We invite these companies into the college to deliver fascinating guest lectures and demonstrations of new technology and equipment, enabling you to stay up to date and ahead of the game when you begin your career.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.
