What is the course about?

The ‘Get into Construction’ 12-week Skills Bootcamp is designed to equip non-specialist construction workers, unemployed or economically inactive workers with essential practical hand skills. This intensive training program covers a range of key construction-related occupations, ensuring participants gain hands-on experience and confidence in various trades. The bootcamp includes:

 

Electrical Installation -

Participants learn the fundamentals of electrical systems, including wiring, circuit installation, and safety protocols.

 

Plumbing and Heating -

This module covers the basics of plumbing systems, including pipe fitting, water supply, and drainage.

 

Bricklaying -

Participants are introduced to the techniques of bricklaying, including mixing mortar, laying bricks, and constructing walls.

 

Carpentry and Joinery -

This section focuses on woodworking skills including measuring, cutting, and assembling wood components.

 

The Skills Bootcamp prepares students to secure a job as a semi-skilled or skilled labourer and is supported by the Vistry Group and Torus Foundation.  Students will be provided throughout the programme with sector-specific career advice and will be supported to secure either a job or apprenticeship at the end of the programme.

By the end of the skills bootcamp, you'll have developed a solid foundation in various trades, enabling you to perform basic construction tasks with confidence. This boost in confidence can be a significant advantage in your professional journey.

What will I learn?

Electrical Installation:

Wiring and circuit installation, you will learn how to install and connect electrical wiring and circuits.

Lighting and fixtures, you will practice installing lighting fixtures, outlets, and switches.

 

Plumbing and Heating:

Pipe fitting, you will gain skills in fitting and connecting pipes for water supply and drainage.

 

Bricklaying:

Mixing mortar, you will learn the correct techniques for mixing mortar.

Laying bricks, you will practice laying bricks to construct walls and other structures.

 

Carpentry and Joinery:

Measuring and cutting, you will learn to measure and cut wood accurately.

Assembling wood components, you will practice assembling doors, windows, and frames.

 

You will also undergo CSCS Card training in order to be able to secure work on live construction sites at the end of the programme.

This course is delivered over a 12-week period in which you will attend college one day per week (9am to 4.30pm). Each trade area will be completed on a 3-week cycle, and you will be required to complete a candidate assessment pack throughout your course.

What will the course lead on to?

All students who successfully complete the Skills Bootcamp will be offered an interview with Vistry to secure employment within the construction industry as a semi-skilled or skilled labourer. Those who successfully complete the Skills Bootcamp also have the possibility of gaining an apprenticeship in a subject specific occupational area of construction.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a series of construction tutors who will deliver your course.  We also have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Careers support is provided by sector specialists on-programme as well as by the college’s Careers Team post-study.

What are the entry requirements?

The Skills Bootcamp is targeted at the following:

 

·         Those who do not currently work in the Construction sector and who wish to secure a role as a semi-skilled or skilled labourer or secure an apprenticeship in a subject specific occupational area of construction.

 

Specific information, advice and guidance will be provided by our curriculum teams before enrolling on the programme.

 

Students must reside in a Cheshire or Warrington postcode area to access funding for this programme.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

All costs are covered within the course fees.
