What is the course about?
This short 6-week course is aimed as a follow-on skills course for those who have completed the “Constructing Low Level Walls Using Light Weight Blocks” or those with basic ability wanting to further develop their trowel skills and learn how to build a basic cavity wall.
Why should I choose the course?
This short course further develops a range of hand-skills and practical tasks in bricklaying that build on your basic pre-existing abilities. You will learn how to construct the basics of a cavity wall, including the use of tie wires and damp proof course.
What will I learn?
Over the 6 weeks, you will develop skills and knowledge in the following:
• The difference between inner and outer leaf of a cavity wall.
• Placing cavity wall ties for structural stability.
• Ensuring correct cavity width for insulation.
• Installing damp proof course to prevent moisture issues.
• Pointing and finishing techniques for a professional look.
What will the course lead on to?
On completion of the course, you could consider studying further on our “Repairing and Maintaining Brickwork Structures” course. You may also wish to progress to full certified qualifications in the trade area.

The course is aligned to bricklaying practices and can be the first step towards a career in the construction industry if students wish.
