What is the course about?

The 12-week Data Analyst Skills Bootcamp provides and an introduction to databases and Structured Query Language (SQL) and consists of tutor led sessions with plenty of opportunities to practice and implement what you have learnt.

The learning outcomes for the Bootcamp are as follows:


• Design and create a Database with MS access
• Introduce (SQL1) and develop SQL (SQL2) using MS Access and SQL Lite.

During the first part of the course, you will learn how databases are used, acquire knowledge and skill in designing, developing and testing a relational database and you will analyse and present your findings. Students will gain knowledge about the structure and principles of databases and the use of database tools to design and test a relational database to meet a client’s need. Students will also learn how to utilise database techniques to analysis and present data.

The second part of the course will include an introduction to Structured Query Language (SQL). SQL is a programming language designed to manage data stored in relation databases. SQL is a powerful and robust tool for extracting relevant and useful data from both large and small datasets. This course will cover the basics of databases and the SQL commands used to manage them.

Fundamental sector knowledge, practical skills and transferable skills – for example, organisation, self-assessment and the ability to interpret data – will all be developed throughout the Skills Bootcamp. The programme will help students to build their confidence when undertaking the more complex practical techniques. The Skills Bootcamp will give students the basic knowledge to design and create databases with SQL.

Why should I choose the course?

The Data Analyst Skills Bootcamp has been co-designed with employers to align with industry standards and sector skills needs. The Skills Bootcamp is delivered out of the newly refurbished Winsford campus, part of the Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology, and is delivered by expert trainers from the college’s Advanced Creative & Digital Skills Academy.

The college will refer all students who successfully complete the Skills Bootcamp to a locally recruiting employer from its wealth of industry contacts to undertake a job interview at the end of the programme.

The course is fully funded for all self-referring students from a Cheshire and Warrington postcode or for those seeking Data Analyst work in the Cheshire & Warrington area. For those already in work in a related field who wish to upskill to secure new responsibilities or promotions with their current employer, the Skills Bootcamp is co-funded and there is an employer contribution fee required.

The skills and experience that students will gain through the Skills Bootcamp will be invaluable for beginning their career as a Data Technician or for enabling those already in digital-related employment to progress in their careers. Fundamental sector knowledge, practical skills and transferable employability skills (such as organisation, self-assessment and the ability to interpret data) will all be developed through the Skills Bootcamp.

The programme will support students to build their confidence when undertaking more complex practical techniques, including accessing and manipulating databases, database design, and SQL. Whilst on-programme, students will work directly with industry experts to develop sector specific employability skills. Students will be supported with CV writing and preparation for interview.

This Skills Bootcamp will ensure that students are developing these key sector-specific skills, thus improving their career prospects.

Through a series of practical tasks, students will develop skills and knowledge about how databases and SQL are used throughout industry. Students will learn how to design, develop and test relational databases to meet specific client needs, using industry-standard database tools. They will also have the opportunity to learn how to analyse and present data effectively using database techniques.

The Skills Bootcamp is delivered over a 12-week period in which students will attend college one day per week and undergo additional online learning activities in their own time. Learning will be assessed through a variety of ways including observation of practical skills, written logs and data exercises.

Please note that the course will pause during the summer holidays and resume at the end of August.

Are there any links with industry and university?

The Skills Bootcamp benefits from access to the college’s extensive employer network of over 650 active local and regional employers. Key industry experts and employers have contributed to the co-design of the Skills Bootcamp to ensure that it aligns with sector need and provides students with the skills they need to further their digital career. Key employers that work with the Advanced Creative & Digital Skills Academy include: Sovini, the NHS, Angel Solutions and Morgan Digital.

What support is available?

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Wellbeing Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Careers support is provided by sector specialists on-programme as well as by the college’s Careers Team post-study.

Why should I choose to study the course at Warrington & Vale Royal College?

This programme is delivered by expert teachers and is designed in collaboration with industry and employers. It is delivered at the college’s Winsford campus, which has recently undergone a £2million refurbishment and is part of the Cheshire & Warrington Institute of Technology. The wider campus also offers newly refurbished computer suites, private study pods and blended learning facilities. Over 90% of students who study on courses at Warrington & Vale Royal College progress positively into jobs, apprenticeships, further/higher education and self-employment.

What are the entry requirements?

The Skills Bootcamp is targeted at the following:

  • Those who do not currently work in the Digital sector but who have prior learning (to a minimum of level 3) or relevant industry experience in a digital-related discipline, and who wish to secure a role as a Junior Data Analyst, Data Analyst, Business Analyst or similar.
  • Those who are already working in a digital-related sector and need to upskill their practical skills to progress in their career and secure promotional opportunities or take on new responsibilities.
  • Recent graduates who have studied on a digital-related degree and who need to advance their technical skills in order to secure their first digital-based job.

Specific information, advice and guidance will be provided by our curriculum teams before enrolling on the programme.

To access funding for this programme, students must reside in a Cheshire or Warrington postcode area or be in employment in a related job with a Cheshire and Warrington based employer.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

All course costs are included within funding/course fee, with the exception of some photocopying costs that learners may need to pay for (usually no more than £10). Students are expected to cover their own transport costs for attending college and job interviews at the end of the programme.
