What is the course about?

This online coaching and mentoring course equips you with the essential knowledge, skills, and understanding to coach and mentor others. It is suitable for people who are teaching, coaching or training, and/or who need to be able to coach and mentor individuals in a range of settings including on-the-job training in a training company, F.E. College, Adult Learning Service or a company’s internal training department. It is also suitable for adults who want to diversify into coaching and mentoring on a part-time basis.


Through practical, taught online sessions, you will develop your coaching and mentoring skills, increasing your confidence and ability to make a positive impact and support other learners in a coaching and mentoring capacity. You must be occupationally competent in the vocational area in which you are providing coaching and mentoring.


Whether you are new to coaching and mentoring or have experience, this qualification will enhance your expertise. It is ideal as a starting point for your career in coaching and mentoring.

What will I learn?

On this live online course, you will learn what it takes to be an effective coach and mentor, gaining a clear understanding of how coaching and mentoring operate, and how to engage others in the learning and development process.

You will prepare for coaching and mentoring roles by applying recognised coaching and mentoring models, and the essential tools and techniques to support the coaching and mentoring processes.

The course provides opportunities to practise your skills through supervised coaching and mentoring sessions, allowing you to reflect on and analyse your performance to continuously improve.

Live online sessions run fortnightly between 5.30pm – 8.30pm, with support from your tutor and tutorials in between sessions as and when required. There will also be blended learning activities for approx. 2-3 hours in between sessions.

The five mandatory units you will undertake are:

  • Understanding Mentoring
  • Mentoring Practice
  • Engage Others in the Learning and Development Process
  • Preparing for the Coaching Role
  • Coaching Skills.

What will the course lead on to?

Successful completion of this course provides a valuable opportunity for progression to the City and Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training, the City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, or the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged 18 or over and be able to meet the assessment requirements of the qualification. This includes having access to people to engage with for coaching and mentoring, and providing evidence of this within your portfolio, alongside your other assessed knowledge work.

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements to study on this course, a course discussion is required to ensure you are suitable to study at this level. You should also be proficient in the use of the English Language and must be occupationally competent in the vocational area in which you are providing coaching and mentoring.

If English is your second language, you will need to have achieved at least Level 1 ESOL in order to be able to undertake this course. Basic digital skills are required, and you should be able to use email, access learning platforms, and submit assignments electronically. Regular access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a stable internet connection is essential.
