What is the course about?

This part time adult course explores how billions of devices connect to networks every day and how this is shaping the digital world.

You’ll be introduced to the Internet of Things (IoT), learning how everyday objects use sensors, software, and connectivity to collect and share data without human intervention.

The digital course also looks at how these smart devices work together within larger systems, helping to drive innovation across industries and creating new and exciting career opportunities.

Why should I choose the course?

This part-time course is an ideal first step if you’re looking to build your knowledge of networking and emerging technologies. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-growing area, with new companies, products, and career opportunities developing worldwide.

You’ll explore how IoT works alongside technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity to transform industries. These skills are in demand across a wide range of sectors, from manufacturing to environmental conservation, giving you flexible and future-focused career options.

With over 26 billion devices already connected and sharing data, IoT is rapidly shaping the world around us. This adult course will help you understand these changes and begin developing the skills needed to progress into a well-paid, exciting field.

What will I learn?

You’ll gain a beginner-friendly understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT), including how everyday objects connect to the internet and communicate with each other.

You’ll also explore how digital transformation works, and how organisations use data, connectivity, and digital technologies to improve the way they operate.

The course will help you understand why IoT and digital transformation matter, including their real-world impact and the opportunities they create across different industries. You’ll follow a structured set of modules covering how networks connect devices, how systems can be programmed, how data is generated and used, and how automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning are applied in modern technology.

You’ll also learn the importance of security in protecting connected systems, as well as explore future trends and career opportunities in this field. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a range of foundational skills, including an understanding of IoT concepts, digital transformation, basic programming, data awareness, automation, and key security principles.

The part time, short course is designed to be flexible and manageable, with around 6 hours of learning delivered over several weeks. You’ll complete short quizzes to check your understanding, along with a final assessment, and earn a Cisco Introduction to IoT and Digital Transformation badge to recognise your achievement.

What will the course lead on to?

This course can lead on to further study within the Cisco learning pathway, starting with the Cisco Networking Basics course to build your core networking knowledge. From there, you can progress towards more advanced training, such as preparing for Network Technician roles or working towards the globally recognised CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification.

These progression routes can help you develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to move into entry-level networking roles and continue building a career in IT and networking.

Are there any links with industry and university?

This course has been developed by Cisco, one of the world’s largest network infrastructure and management companies. This strong industry link ensures the content reflects real-world practices and provides you with up-to-date knowledge and skills that are valued by employers.
