What is the course about?

This nationally recognised qualification is designed to equip students with the skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) across a variety of everyday topics. You will develop confidence in both understanding (reception) and using (production) BSL in simple, practical conversations.

Why should I choose the course?

This qualification is ideal if you:

  • Want to learn basic skills for simple conversations with Deaf people
  • Are interested in acquiring new language skills 
  • Intend to progress to higher-level BSL qualifications or employment involving BSL
  • Are pursuing personal development
  • Are a parent, family member, friend, or colleague of someone who is Deaf.

What will I learn?

The course is structured into three key units:

  • Introduction to BSL – Learn the foundations of BSL, including finger spelling and basic vocabulary
  • Conversational BSL – Develop the ability to hold simple conversations using BSL
  • Communication in BSL about everyday life – Learn to communicate effectively on familiar day-to-day topics.

What will the course lead on to?

Through achieving this qualification, learners can progress on to:

  • Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language
  • Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language
