What is the course about?
This short, non-accredited course for beginners is ideal for those who wish to start learning the Italian language. You will begin with the basics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, and telling the time. This will give you the foundational knowledge needed to progress onto the College’s other short Italian courses.
As with all languages, it is important to practise outside the classroom. You will receive handouts each week, but no structured homework is given.
Why should I choose the course?
This course provides the basic skills to get you started with Italian. It will help you communicate using simple questions and requests—ideal if you're going on holiday, or thinking about living in Italy and want to begin learning the language.
What will I learn?
During the course, you will:
• Learn the Italian alphabet and recall the additional letters
• Understand how to form positive sentence structures using verbs
• Compose a short spoken introduction about yourself using basic factual information
• Understand how to use the first person when describing physical traits
• Recognise the placement of adjectives in relation to nouns within a sentence
• Analyse and accurately translate a series of sentence structures into Italian using the first person singular
You will be informally assessed by the tutor and will also self-assess your weekly progress using an individual learning plan.
What will the course lead on to?
The non-accredited beginners’ courses begin with Getting Started with Italian, followed by Build on Your Italian, and then Italian for Everyday Use. If you wish to continue learning, you can progress to Enhancing Your Italian to the Next Level, which is designed to help you practise the speaking, reading, and writing skills developed in the first three courses.
Please note that the College does not offer accredited Italian courses.
