What is the course about?
This short, non-accredited continuation course is ideal for beginners who want to start learning Spanish. You’ll begin with the basics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, and telling the time, building a strong foundation of knowledge to help you progress onto other short Spanish courses offered by the college.
As with any language, regular practice outside of the classroom is important. You’ll receive handouts each week to support your learning, though no structured homework will be set.
Why should I choose the course?
This course will give you the essential skills to get started with Spanish and help you communicate using simple questions and requests, perfect for holidays or if you're thinking about living in a Spanish-speaking country and want to begin learning the language.
What will I learn?
During the course, you will:
• Learn and understand the Spanish alphabet, including the additional letters
• Form positive sentence structures using the verbs ‘tener’, ‘ser’, and ‘estar’
• Compose a short spoken introduction about yourself, covering basic personal information
• Understand how to use the first-person forms ‘soy’ and ‘tengo’ to describe physical traits
• Recognise the correct placement of adjectives in relation to nouns
• Analyse and accurately translate a range of sentence structures into Spanish using the first-person singular
You will be informally assessed by your tutor, and you’ll also track your progress each week using an individual learning plan.
What will the course lead on to?
Our non-accredited beginners’ courses begin with Getting Started with Spanish, followed by Build on Your Spanish, and then Spanish for Everyday Use. If you wish to continue your learning journey, you can progress to Enhancing Your Spanish to the Next Level, which is designed to help you practise and develop your speaking, reading, and writing skills based on the knowledge gained in the previous three courses.
