What is the course about?
This is a short, non-accredited course for beginners who have completed the Getting Started with Italian course and wish to continue building their knowledge of the language.
As with all languages, regular practice outside the classroom is important. You will receive handouts each week, but no structured homework is given.
Why should I choose the course?
This course focuses on the vocabulary and grammar needed to build confidence in everyday situations in an Italian-speaking environment. It will develop both your understanding of the language and your knowledge of Italian culture. Key speaking skills such as pronunciation, intonation, and confidence will be developed, along with techniques to support writing, reading, and listening progression.
What will I learn?
During the course, you will cover:
• Speaking: Practising spoken Italian to express likes and dislikes and engaging in conversations with classmates
• Listening: Listening to the teacher and classmates to understand questions and responses related to likes and dislikes (note: corrected from "Spanish" to "Italian")
• Reading: Reading Italian texts related to likes and dislikes to build vocabulary and comprehension
• Writing: Writing sentences and short paragraphs in Italian to describe likes and dislikes
• Cultural awareness: Learning about cultural differences in preferences and how these vary across Italian-speaking countries
You will be informally assessed by the tutor and will also self-assess your weekly progress using an individual learning plan.
What will the course lead on to?
The non-accredited beginner courses follow a progression: Getting Started, Build on Your Italian, and Italian for Everyday Use. If you wish to continue your learning journey, you can move on to Enhancing Your Italian to the Next Level, which is designed to help you practise the speaking, reading, and writing skills developed in the previous three courses.
Please note that the College does not offer accredited Italian courses.
