What is the course about?

An exhilarating one-year course designed to teach you about the impact of war, conflict and terrorism, and the important role of uniformed services within today’s society. This course is active and fitness-based course, and you will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal skills, and attributes essential to secure a role in the uniformed services. Our experienced tutors will help you to develop willpower and determination, as well as skills in communication, leadership, and teamwork, to ready you for a variety of career pathways in public services.

Whether you would like to serve in the Army, Navy, RAF, or would prefer to work in security or government, there are a huge number of careers available ready for you to embark upon. Our public services course has consistent success rates at all levels, with countless students progressing into the services such as the Royal Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police, Fire and Rescue service.

What will I learn?

This highly active course will look at health and fitness, sport and recreation, land navigation and volunteering. Through practical, hands-on situations, the course is designed to help you to develop the techniques and qualities that prepare you for a career in the military & emergency services. By navigating challenging scenarios, you will hone your communication, leadership and teamwork skills. You will be assessed through a range of internal assessments and exams.

What will the course lead on to?

After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress on to our Level 3 Public Services course, which can lead to opportunities to study at university, or take an apprenticeship to earn while you learn. Alternatively, after completing your level 3, you may wish to seek employment in the public services sector, with roles in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police, Fire and Rescue available.

Are there any links with industry and university?

Our experienced public services tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and draw upon their years of service to provide you with the best possible insight into the career paths in front of you. As part of your learning experience, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers, ranging from past students now in the services, some with ten years’ experience, to leading professionals in the services. Meeting industry professionals will help you to develop the vital skills needed in this sector.

An integral part of this course also includes meeting representatives from the Army, RAF, Navy, Police, Fire Service and NHS recruitment teams, who will provide information and support on recruitment, selection, training, and assessment processes to prepare you for your next steps and improve your chances of success.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a progress coach who will provide you with support to help you succeed on your study programme and progress on to your chosen career or progression path. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

Warrington & Vale Royal College’s Public Services department has strong links with all the public services and trains alongside them to give you the most relevant, up-to-date knowledge and prepare you for life in this challenging yet rewarding sector.

You will also get the opportunity to go on adventurous trips and visits as an important part of your learning. Enrichment activities include sporting and outdoor pursuits such as the Duke of Edinburgh qualifications, along with trips to places such as Low Mill Outdoor Centre in the Yorkshire Dales, the Imperial War Museum, Whitegate Way and even to the Army Reserve Unit to take on challenges similar to the Army selection process.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and/or maths, or successful completion of a level 1 qualification. You will be expected to continue to study towards a GCSE Grade 4 English and/or maths if not already achieved.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

You will be required to purchase the public services uniforms (approximately £180, however this may be subject to increase). Also, you will be required to attend a planned residential trip to complete land and water-based activities as part of the course. This has been provisionally costed at £170, which may be subject to increase by the provider.
