This short, part-time course is designed to give you an overview of what is involved in becoming a Teaching Assistant in a primary or secondary school.

What will I learn?
You will explore the role of a Teaching Assistant within schools, including key responsibilities, required skills, and potential progression routes.
Through practical activities, you will gain an understanding of how learning takes place in the classroom and how to effectively support children.
During the 5-week course, you will cover:
- The role of a Teaching Assistant in primary and secondary schools
- Safeguarding and professional boundaries
- Supporting learning in the classroom
- Behaviour management basics
- How to apply for Teaching Assistant roles
What will the course lead on to?
To become a fully qualified Teaching Assistant, you will need to gain a formal qualification, such as:
- Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning
This qualification will provide the knowledge and skills needed to work within Key Stage 1 or above and support the National Curriculum. You may then progress on to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
If you are not yet ready for a formal qualification, or are considering alternative careers working with children (such as in a nursery or preschool), a wide range of accredited and non-accredited courses are available. Please contact our Learner Services Team for more information.
