What is the course about?
This adult teaching assistant course is suitable if you are recently employed as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant, or if you are looking to gain employment in a school. As one of our education courses for adults, the course requires you to demonstrate competence in both knowledge and practical skills.
This is a work-based qualification, and a placement in a school at Key Stage 1 or above is essential. The placement must be within a reasonable distance of Warrington & Vale Royal College campuses.
You will also be required to provide evidence of an Enhanced DBS (formerly CRB).
The course is delivered online through Google Classroom and an e-portfolio, making it a flexible part-time training course. A PC with internet access is required. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

What will I learn?
 During the course, you will study key topics needed to support teaching and learning in schools, including:
- Children and young people’s development
- Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people, and adults
- Equality, diversity, and inclusion in work with children and young people
- Schools as organisations
- Supporting learning activities
- Improving your own and team practice in schools
- Maintaining and supporting relationships with children and young people
- Supporting positive behaviour in children and young people
- Promoting health and safety for children and young people.
All units will be internally assessed. Assessment methods will include written assignments and tasks set by assessors, as well as direct observation of your performance and review of work products. Additional methods may include reflective accounts based on real work situations, personal planning and written records, recorded professional discussions, PowerPoint presentations, and mentor testimonies.
What will the course lead on to?
The knowledge and credits gained from this course, alongside suitable employment, allow progression onto the Level 3Â Certificate in Teaching Assistant qualification.

Are there any links with industry and university?
You will develop practical, industry relevant skills throughout your work placement, whilst the underpinning knowledge you need will be gained from taught sessions within the college.
To complete this course, you must be working in a face-face role with children for at least one full day or two half days per week and have an enhanced DBS certificate (formerly CRB). Employment will need to be at key stage 1 or above. For those working in a school reception class or nursery class, you should undertake the Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) qualification.

What are the entry requirements?
As this is a work-based qualification, you will be required to have a school placement working at key stage 1 or above, for the full duration of the course. The placement must be either one full day, or two half-days a week; if two half-days, one must be a morning.
Please note that you will be required to self-source your placement.
You will be required to participate in an initial assessment at the beginning of the course.
