What is the course about?

This qualification has been designed to support those who plan to assess apprentices undertaking end-point assessments (EPAs). It will provide specific knowledge and skills for those who already have sector competence within the areas of approved apprenticeship standards, but would like to gain a more specialised understanding of EPA processes and practices. It will support them to understand and use EPA principles and practices to assess an apprentice against an apprenticeship standard.

What will I learn?

This qualification will give you an understanding of how to support students undertaking end-point assessment (EPA).

End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the way in which apprentices are assessed at the end of their programme. Previously, apprentices were continuously assessed throughout their learning. With EPA, apprentices now have their work and competence assessed at the end of their learning, against ‘apprenticeship standards’ established by groups of employers, educators and sector organisations known as ‘apprenticeship trailblazers’.

It is ideal for those who have sector competence within the areas of approved apprenticeship standards and who want a more specialised understanding of EPA assessment processes and practices, and has been designed to cover the assessment methods used in the majority of apprenticeships.

Topics included:

  • Understand the principles and practices of end-point assessment as part of an apprenticeship standard
  • Understand different types and methods of end-point assessment
  • Know how to plan end-point assessments in line with the apprenticeship standard and assessment plan
  • Be able to make end-point assessment decisions
  • Understand quality assurance of the end-point assessment process

The qualification covers assessment methods that are used in the majority of assessment plans for approved apprenticeship standards. This comprises knowledge tests, professional discussions, practical observations and work projects. It has been designed to support assessors in understanding the different types of EPA and the role of the EPA assessor. It will enable them to apply new EPA methodologies while making the distinction between end-point and ongoing assessment, and covers learning outcomes and assessment criteria that focus on EPA grading and quality assurance processes.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

The qualification is assessed by the completion of a portfolio of evidence that must cover all assessment criteria. Learners will demonstrate assessment skills by making, recording and justifying assessment decisions of work and projects against apprenticeship standards and assessment plans. A requirement of the qualification is that learners must complete assessments covering 3 EPA methods. These can take place in a simulated environment.

Each course will consist of 6 underpinning knowledge sessions, with blended learning opportunities, and access to your tutor for tutorials.

What will the course lead on to?
