What is the course about?
This qualification is designed to give learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to provide clinical supervision for counselling practitioners. It is aimed at counsellors who have acquired sufficient client work experience to contemplate the move into a clinical supervision role.
Participants will need to:
- Have both supervisees and supervisory supervision.
- Be working as counsellors under supervision.
This qualification is designed to lead to a role as a clinical counselling supervisor in a counselling agency or in independent practice. Supervision is an ongoing professional requirement for all practising counsellors and those with a recognised qualification are more likely to find employment.
Why should I choose the course?
The course delivery is online and will be 3hr taught lessons for 21 weeks with additional independent learning of 27 hours in total. The course has been designed to support working counsellors in gaining this qualification. The Counselling team are experienced counsellors and supervisors and can offer experience from own professional practice.
We will be utilising a significant amount of creative resources to complete various experiential tasks. Students will have access to the college library resources and online journals to explore the latest research on supervision practices.
What will I learn?
The course involves experiential elements and learning that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal development activities. The course incorporates a minimum of 60 hours formally contracted counselling (one-to-one), with at least five different clients in an agency setting. The course will cover the following units:
- Model and supervise the professional framework
- Model and supervise the skilled use of the relationship
- Model and supervise the use of theory and research on diversity
- Model and supervise a user-centred approach to the work
- Model and supervise the skilled use of the self
- Model and supervise the coherent use of theory, research and skills
- Model and supervise the self-reflective practitioner

You will complete a minimum of 15 supervision sessions as a trainee supervisor with 5 personal supervision sessions.
What will the course lead on to?
Successful candidates will be able to work as counselling supervisors in a range of job and career opportunities, which include but are not limited to:
- A supervisor employed by an agency or organisation that offers individual counselling to adults
- A private supervisor working for an organisation such as a wellness/ mental health setting
- A supervisor in private practice
With further training, a supervisor in an agency or organisation that offers counselling to couples or to children and young people.

The skills and knowledge acquired on this course are transferable to a wide range of career and educational opportunities.

What are the entry requirements?
You must have obtained qualifications a level 4 Diploma in Counselling Skills, or a Foundation degree, or a BSc Hons Degree or Masters in Counselling and evidence of 450 counselling hours
You must be at least 21 years of age to enrol on this course. In addition, you must not be in a current state of severe emotional difficulty or severe psychological confusion, and you must not be currently involved in substance misuse (there is a requirement to be two years’ post rehabilitation).
You need to be able to handle the level of academic work required and show a willingness to take responsibility for yourself. You must be able to respect others regardless of race, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
You will also be required to submit a personal statement discussing your reasons for applying to this course along with a character reference. Furthermore, you will also need to have an interview to assess your eligibility.
