What is the course about?

This career-focused course is designed for 16-18-year-old exercise enthusiasts who want to gain the qualifications, skills, and knowledge needed to progress into employment within the sport, education, health, fitness, and leisure sectors. Throughout their time at the college, learners work with a range of local partners to access employment opportunities that support progression into roles such as gym instructor, PT, or sports coach. The course has been carefully developed in partnership with local employers - and in accordance with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) - to effectively prepare learners for employment.

Why should I choose the course?

If you are looking to progress into employment as a gym instructor and / or sports coach after one college year of study, this is the course for you.

What will I learn?

Over the course of your studies, you will develop the skills to complete a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification and a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Multi-Skills Development in Sport, as well as first aid, customer service, and other professional development units. In addition to developing your personal and professional skills, you will be supported in building the essential qualities needed across the sport, education, health, fitness, and leisure sectors - including communication, empathy, leadership, and independence. You will become familiar with workplace expectations through hands‑on industry placements and meaningful interactions with local partners, such as guest speaker sessions and mock interviews. To ensure you are confident and career‑ready, assessment will take place in practical environments as well as through the completion of a professional portfolio.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

There are very strong links with a range of local partners, such as the Warrington School Sports Partnership (WaSSP), David Lloyd and LiveWire, in addition to the guidance and leadership that comes through working closely with CIMSPA.

What will the course lead on to?

You’ll have the chance to work alongside a variety of local organisations, opening pathways to employment across the sport, education, health, fitness and leisure sectors. These partnerships include opportunities with gym facilities, coaching providers and primary schools, helping you build experience that leads directly into the workforce.
