What is the course about?

The Ascentis Level 1 Award in Understanding Community Interpreting is a part time adult course designed for those who speak more than one language and want to gain an introduction to Community Interpreting. It is suitable for those with an interest in supporting communication within local communities, as well as students who wish to use the course as a first step towards further training or a career as a Community Interpreter.

Why should I choose the course?

This adult course is a great choice if you want to develop your English, use your first language in real-life community situations and take the first step towards future training or employment. You will:

  • Support your community - by understanding how interpreters help people access health, education, housing, and voluntary services.
  • Develop useful skills – by improving listening, speaking, and communication skills that are valuable for work and everyday life.
  • Explore new career options – by finding out what Community Interpreters do and whether this could be the right pathway for you.

What will I learn?

This part time adult course will help you to build confidence, understand how interpreting works, and see how your languages can be used in real-life. You will learn to:

  • Use your language skills confidently and effectively in bilingual situations.
  • Understand the different sectors where Community Interpreters may work, such as health, education, and community services.
  • Learn about the role and responsibilities of a Community Interpreter, including professional behaviour and communication skills.

What will the course lead on to?

This adult course can help you move on to further interpreter training, volunteer opportunities in the local community and progression from ESOL into other courses or work. It is a first step if you want to use your languages in a practical way and build your confidence for the future.
