What is the course about?

Why should I choose the course?
An employee in this occupation will be responsible for proactively finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business.
Laboratory technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a laboratory team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their own work.
In any context, working safely and ethically is paramount and many companies operate under highly regulated conditions. Laboratory technicians therefore follow quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to their work.
This apprenticeship does not require you to achieve additional qualifications or professional recognition. However, this apprenticeship standard has been carefully designed with some of the requirements of certain relevant professional bodies in mind. Apprentices and employers should speak to the professional bodies relevant to the industry or sector within which they are working to ascertain the additional requirements that must be met for professional recognition by these organisations. Recognition by those organisations will be dependent on the acquisition of learning as defined by them.
What will I learn?
This apprenticeship will cover the following units: scientific investigation skills, practical scientific procedures and techniques, laboratory techniques and their applications. You can also choose option units including: physiology of the human body, human regulation and reproduction, and genetics and genetic engineering.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
You will normally work around 30 hours per week, and no more than 40 hours (if you are under 18), which includes any training time at college (off-the-job) as well as on-the-job training in the workplace with your employer.
What will the course lead on to?
After completing this apprenticeship, you may wish to enter employment or take your studies further by progressing onto higher education.
What support is available?
You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
