What is the course about?

This course has been developed for those who are working with children and infants. The purpose of the qualification is for the student to attain the knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations.

This two-day qualification fulfils the requirements for first aid training detailed in the Department for Education’s statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Why should I choose the course?

You should choose to study this course if you work with children and infants. It is highly relevant if you're a teacher, childminder, crèche assistant, playgroup worker, or anyone else responsible for children's welfare.

The course provides both knowledge and practical skills to confidently handle a range of paediatric first aid situations.

It’s a two-day qualification, meaning you can gain essential, career-relevant training in a short time.

It meets the Department for Education’s statutory first aid requirements for the Early Years Foundation Stage, so it's ideal if you work, or plan to work, in early years settings.

In short, it’s a practical, focused course that enhances your ability to keep children safe and helps you meet professional requirements.

What will I learn?

The course covers a wide range of essential topics to prepare you for paediatric first aid situations. You’ll learn about the role of the Paediatric First Aider, how to carry out a primary survey, and how to respond to incidents such as choking, seizures, diabetic emergencies, asthma attacks, and allergic reactions—including anaphylaxis. Training also includes resuscitation (CPR) and the safe use of an AED.

You’ll gain practical skills in treating wounds, bleeding, shock, minor injuries, fractures, and head, neck, and back injuries. Additional topics include managing febrile convulsions, meningitis, the recovery position, dealing with foreign bodies, electrical incidents, and the effects of extreme heat and cold. This comprehensive training ensures you’re equipped to act confidently and effectively in a wide variety of emergency situations involving infants and young children.

What will the course lead on to?

This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is recommended that you attend annual refresher training.

You will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
