For students aged 16–18 who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English or maths, continuing to work towards these essential qualifications is a requirement in post-16 education. Across the UK, around 40% of students do not achieve a grade 4 in GCSE English and/or maths at school. This makes effective post-16 support vital in helping young people gain the qualifications they need to progress into further study, apprenticeships, or employment. At Warrington & Vale Royal College, students resitting English and maths receive tailored teaching, focused exam preparation, and pastoral support designed to rebuild confidence as well as skills.
The most recent cohort performed exceptionally well, with the proportion of English students achieving a pass surpassing the national GCSE resit average by 27.1%. Likewise, the college’s dedicated maths students secured pass rates that were 35.9% above the national average.
Reflecting on these results, Sophie Smithdale, Curriculum Manager for English, said: “Teaching such motivated and engaged learners was a real pleasure, especially as they exceeded their targets after just a few months at the college.”
Fellow English tutor, Kate, added: “I am so proud of these students and their incredible exam success. It is a challenge to get 'exam ready' in such a short space of time, and they worked so very hard to do this. Well done, everyone!”
Warrington & Vale Royal College continues to support students at every stage of their journey, offering courses from entry level through to level 3 and T Levels (equivalent to three A Levels). With a wide range of entry requirements designed to keep education accessible and inclusive, the college is proud to help students rebuild confidence, achieve vital qualifications, and move forward into positive futures.
