What is the course about?
This apprenticeship will allow you to gain practical experience as well as valuable new skills to become a successful Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician. You will have the opportunity to choose either an electrical or mechanical pathway and will receive specialised guidance from both expert tutors at the college and your employer.
Why should I choose the course?
Apprenticeships allow you to gain practical experience and develop valuable new skills whilst earning a wage. As an apprentice maintenance and operations engineering technician you will learn the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to undertake an electrical or mechanical technician role by attending tutored sessions in college and gaining valuable industrial experience with your employer.
What will I learn?
During this course, you will initially learn foundation skills and knowledge in a workshop environment, including using lathes for turning operations, preparing and using milling machines, and conducting business improvement techniques. You will then move onto more advanced study, focusing on units such as mathematics for engineering technicians, electrical principles, mechanical principles, and selecting and using programmable controllers.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you will undertake an end-point assessment (EPA) to test your skills, knowledge, and behaviours. Successfully completing the EPA allows you to achieve the apprenticeship standard and gain access to professional recognition.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
In the first year of your apprenticeship, you will typically study at college two days per week, while in your second and third years you will spend one day per week at college.
You will normally work around 30 hours per week, and no more than 40 hours if you are under 18. This includes any training time at college (off-the-job) as well as the on-the-job training you will complete with your employer.
What will the course lead on to?
Upon completion of this apprenticeship, you will be able to register as an engineering technician with the Engineering Council. You could also choose to progress on to a higher apprenticeship to further develop your skills.
What support is available?
You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.
