What is the course about?

As a maintenance and operations engineering technician (electrical or mechanical) you will work on various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the engineering industry sectors.

You will undertake installation, testing, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance, and repair of a range of equipment, sometimes complex, as part of planned preventative and reactive maintenance programmes. You may also undertake decommissioning activities when plant is being removed from service.

You can choose whether to take the electrical technician or the mechanical technician pathway.

Why should I choose the course?

Apprenticeships allow you to gain practical experience and develop valuable new skills whilst earning a wage. As an apprentice maintenance and operations engineering technician you will learn the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to undertake an electrical or mechanical technician role by attending tutored sessions in college and gaining valuable industrial experience with your employer.

What will I learn?

During this course you will initially learn foundation skills and knowledge in a workshop environment, including electrical, mechanical, using lathes for turning operations, preparing and using milling machines, and conducting business improvement techniques.

You will then move onto the advanced stage where you will study a level 3 technical knowledge certificate including the following units:

  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Electrical principles
  • Mechanical principles
  • Selecting and using programmable controllers
  • Further mathematics
  • Electrical principles
  • Mechanical principles.

You will be assigned an apprentice coach who, alongside your employer, will guide you through the apprenticeship programme and assist you in studying a work-based learning qualification to develop your skills and knowledge in the workplace. The qualification can be tailored to suit apprentice and employer requirements. Please see below the typical qualifications you will study:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (electrical or mechanical route).

Upon completion of the programme, you will undertake an end-point assessment (EPA) to test your skills, knowledge, and behaviours. Successfully completing the EPA allows you to achieve the apprenticeship standard and have access to professional recognition.

How is the apprenticeship delivered?

In the first year of your apprenticeship, you will typically study at college two days per week, while in your second and third years you will spend one day per week at college.

You will normally work around 30 hours per week, and no more than 40 hours if you are under 18. This includes any training time at college (off-the-job) as well as the on-the-job training you will complete with your employer.

What will the course lead on to?

Upon completion of this apprenticeship, you will be able to register as an engineering technician with the Engineering Council. You could also choose to progress on to a higher apprenticeship to further develop your skills.

What support is available?

You will be allocated a designated apprenticeship coach to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

We also have a dedicated apprenticeship matching service which matches your skills to a suitable apprenticeship employer. The college is dedicated to supporting you on-programme and helping you progress on to the next step.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme are GCSE grades 9-4, or level 2 functional skills qualifications in English and maths. We will consider those who need to resit either an English or maths qualification, however those that need to resit both will not meet the entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme.

If you are required to resit either English or maths, you will be invited to undertake an initial assessment. If deemed suitable, you must be willing to achieve your level 2 English/maths qualification before the end of the apprenticeship programme as part of your study.
