What is the course about?
Engineering Operatives are predominantly involved in engineering operations which are key to the success of the manufacturing and engineering sector allowing employers to grow their business while developing a workforce with the relevant skills and knowledge to enhance and sustain the sector.
The role covers a wide range of common and job-specific skill sets that can be transferred across the manufacturing engineering industry sectors during the course of their careers. Dependent on the sector that they are employed in there may be subtle differences in terms of composition and application of the job role-specific skills and knowledge they will require, however, the core skills and knowledge will be the same regardless of the sector/area they work in.
Why should I choose the course?
Apprenticeships equip you with relevant skills and allow you to gain great work experience whilst earning a wage. As an apprentice engineering operative, you will learn the key skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to undertake an engineering operative role. During your course you will attend focussed tutorial sessions at college as well as gaining valuable industry experience with your employer.
What will I learn?
During this course you will initially learn a variety of foundation skills and knowledge in a workshop environment. These include electrical, mechanical, using lathes for turning operations, preparing and using milling machines, and conducting business improvement techniques.
You will also study a level 2 technical knowledge certificate which covers engineering environment awareness, fitting and assembly techniques, and further engineering disciplines.
You will be assigned an apprenticeship coach who, alongside your employer, will guide you through the apprenticeship programme and assist you with developing your skills and knowledge in your specialist job role.
After completing the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations (Competence) and the Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations (Knowledge), you will then take part in an end-point assessment (EPA) in order to achieve the apprenticeship standard.
The EPA will directly assess the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have developed throughout the standard. The components of the EPA are:
Portfolio – a portfolio of evidence comprising of naturally-occurring evidence during the on-programme period from the workplace, backed up by relevant company processes and procedures.
Practical skills observation – designed to assess your application of skills.
Professional discussion – to holistically assess knowledge, skills and behaviours across the standard, which will be informed by the reflective portfolio.
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
Throughout the duration of this two-year apprenticeship, you will generally spend one day per week in college (day release).
You will normally work around 30 hours per week, and no more than 40 hours if you are under 18. This includes any training time at college (off-the-job) as well as the on-the-job training you will complete with your employer.
What will the course lead on to?
On completion of this course, you could progress on to a level 3 engineering apprenticeship to further your skills and knowledge.
What support is available?
You will be allocated a designated tutor to guide you through your apprenticeship. We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed.

What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements for this apprenticeship programme are GCSE grade 3 or above in English and maths, or level 1 functional skills qualifications in English and maths.
