What is the course about?

high level of occupational ability. The course will help you take your first step towards working in a barbershop as a junior stylist. You will not yet be workplace ready after completing this course, but with additional training and development you will soon be ready to enter the world of employment.

This qualification will help you develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to confidently advise and consult with men on type of haircut and facial hair shaping. You will also be able to use your knowledge to advise what is most suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service, protecting both yourself and your clients. At interview you must indicate that you are able to commit to three hours per week.

This qualification will help to prepare you for employment in a fast-paced, thriving industry. The course will provide you with the essential skills that employers are looking for and allow you to take your first step towards achieving your goals.

What will I learn?

This qualification comprises of four units which will prepare you to work effectively as a junior barber: client consultation for hair services, cutting men's hair, cutting facial hair, and following health and safety in the salon.

Throughout this course you will work in a commercial salon and be assessed via practical tasks on paying clients. There will also be an online examination for each unit. You will need to pass all elements to ensure successful completion of the qualification.

What will the course lead on to?

After completing this course, you will be able to progress on to the Advanced Barbering course to expand your skills further and support you to finding employment in a salon or become self-employed.

If you have experience of women’s hairdressing, this qualification will also prepare you for employment as a junior unisex hairdresser. Completing this course will broaden your career opportunities and allow you to offer unisex services in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in a unisex hair salon
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a barber, you may choose to develop your skill base further by undertaking specialist qualifications relating to hairdressing.

Are there any links with industry and university?

The hairdressing and barbering team have close industry links, and guest speakers from companies such as Wella are invited into college to speak to students on a regular basis.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, but you must be aged at least 18 and hold at least a level 1 qualification in English.

You will be expected to attend 100% of your course to meet the required professional standards, wear all black, no denim and closed sensible footwear.
