Students arrived at the historic location and were transformed into glamorous graduands donning caps, gowns and beaming smiles in anticipation of finally being able to celebrate with their peers and tutors. The event was attended by a host of VIPs and friends of the college, including the Mayor of Warrington and guest speaker Corporal Andy Reid MBE. The college also proudly appointed two new fellows: Michelle Cloney of Warrington & Halton NHS Trustand Stephen Fitzsimons, Chief Executive at Warrington Chamber of Commerce.
Attendees were inspired by Andy Reid MBE, who in October 2009 was injured so badly in an explosion that it was thought he would not survive, but despite this he has defied all odds and achieved so much deemed impossible. Andy gave an awe-inspiring speech with one key message: to always be the best version of oneself. Warrington & Vale Royal College are incredibly grateful to Andy for taking the time to speak at the event and for the incredible, lasting impression he made.
This year’s award ceremonies were special for several reasons; not only the gravitas of everyone coming together to celebrate after so long, but a chance to share fond memories of two college staff who sadly lost their lives in recent years. A warm welcome was given to the families of Craig Atherton and Colin Daniels, who took the time to attend the ceremony and celebrate in the success of the students. This year, a special award was dedicated to Craig: The Craig Atherton Higher Education Sporting Excellence Award. The college were honoured to have members of his family present when the award was presented to Callum Barnett in an emotional tribute.
Well done to fellow special award winners Nichola O‘Brien, Avegail Gardiola, Kate Gibbons, Adam Harrison, Michelle Pink, Angel Smith and Robynne Wood who were all selected by their tutors in recognition of their unwavering efforts and attitude to learning. It was a fantastic day had by all and Warrington & Vale Royal College are already looking forward to the next one!
