Warrington & Vale Royal College Higher Education students commended at TEDxWarrington 2023

Warrington & Vale Royal College's higher education students garnered praise from event organisers at this year's TEDxWarrington, held at the Trust Alliance Group, Daresbury Park on 16th November.

The college is honoured to have been the audio-visual event partner for TEDxWarrington this year. Phil MacDonald, Creative Media Lecturer at the college, initiated contact with Kirsty James, event licensee and organiser of TEDxWarrington, in August of this year to explore potential opportunities for higher education students to collaborate on this prestigious event. Drawing on his experience of filming TEDx talks in the past, he believed it would be a valuable experience for students. After a couple of meetings discussing briefs and logistics, Warrington & Vale Royal College joined as an event partner. This partnership displays TEDxWarrington's commitment to investing in young talent and offering local students the chance to gain work experience with a globally recognised brand.

The college's higher education students joined forces with event videographers, Prism Studios, ensuring additional staff, equipment, and event footage support. Warrington & Vale Royal College also provided filming equipment including cameras, batteries, tripods, and more, from the college's Advanced Creative & Digital Skills (ACDS) Academy, which is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The students' access to such remarkable resources at the college enhances their ability to apply knowledge to real-life projects like TEDxWarrington.

Prism Studios has collaborated closely with Warrington & Vale Royal College on several occasions in the past, producing several promotional videos which are available to view on Warrington & Vale Royal College's website. This established relationship oversaw a seamless collaboration between the college and Prism Studios for this event.

The higher education students were given a brief to produce a showreel of the event, create vox pops with TEDxWarrington team members and event sponsors, capture speaker stage arrivals and departures, document audience reactions, and film the welcome address, interval socials and finale thanks. Capturing these additional shots, not covered by the videographers, provided event organisers with extra content to share and may contribute to promoting the event in the following years. Students are currently working on editing these pieces and are looking forward to submitting them to TEDxWarrington once completed.

The students who participated in the event on the night, Gabriel Madden and Adam Walton, demonstrated professionalism and adaptability, with the support of college staff Phil MacDonald, John Fraser, and Liam Fraser.

Phil MacDonald, Creative Media Lecturer at the college, expressed: "Having a filming and editing opportunity at TEDxWarrington has been an invaluable experience for our HNC and HND students. Working alongside Prism Studios and TEDxWarrington Organiser Kirsty James has been a great way for the students to gain real-world industry experience."

Kirsty James, event organiser and licensee, said: “I was hugely impressed by how self-sufficient, polite, professional, and technically able the college team was. Staff and students alike slotted into my wider 25-strong team without any concern at all. I genuinely hope that the venture paves the way for further partnerships going forward and investment in young people that are located in the immediate geography covered by TEDxWarrington.”
