Student life in T Levels: What to expect

Libby Noonan T Level Business

If you're considering enrolling on a T Level course, you're probably already aware that they are a step toward gaining hands-on, industry-relevant skills. But what about life as a T Level student? How does it compare to traditional academic routes like A Levels or other practical options such as BTEC courses?

We spoke to current T Level Business student Libby Noonan about her experience as a T Level student. In this blog, we’ll guide you through what to expect from student life in T Levels, giving you an insider’s view of how this qualification prepares you for the future. Whether you’ve already applied, or you just want a bit more information on how T Levels work, read on to learn what makes T Levels an exciting and rewarding choice.

Why choose to study a T Level?

T Levels were recently introduced as a way of encouraging students to gain industry experience alongside the knowledge and skills they would develop as part of a standard Level 3 qualification.

Libby said: “I chose to study a T Level because I loved the idea of combining practical work with academic learning. It’s rewarding to know that I’m not only gaining a nationally recognised qualification, but also getting real-world experience through my industry placement at the same time.”

What can Year 11s expect from studying a T Level?

With a T Level, Year 11s can expect a more intensive course compared to other qualification types. T Levels prepare you for your future career by helping you develop in-demand industry skills. You will learn the essential knowledge required for the industry you are wanting to progress into.

Libby said: “T Levels require hard work, but it’s definitely worth it. You gain experience you wouldn’t typically pick up with any other type of course, but you need to be prepared to put the work in.”

What is industry placement like? Why is it important?

As part of your T Level course, you will be required to spend 20% of your college hours completing an industry placement relevant to your course. From hospitals and local primary schools to national organisations, our students have completed industry placement at a range of different places suited to their needs. Industry placements allow you to apply what you have learnt in the classroom to the workplace and are essential to building your network and opening doors for future career opportunities, boosting your employability and understanding of the sector.

Libby said: “Industry placements are great! You get real tasks and responsibilities whilst still being mentored, which you wouldn’t necessarily get in a full-time job. I have been completing my placement with the marketing department at the college, and I have already gained so much experience. I feel like my placement is going to really help me in the future when I am looking for a job.”

What does a typical week look like when studying a T Level?

T Levels incorporate both time at college and time in the workplace. You will spend roughly 80% of your time in the classroom, and 20% of your time completing your placement. Each course at the college follows a different timetable, but all T Level courses include a mixture of in-person learning, blended learning and work-based learning.

Libby said: “A typical week on my course includes 3 full days in college studying towards your qualification, 1 day of blended learning completing online tasks from home and 1 day at my work placement. I enjoy the mix as it keeps each week interesting and allows me to apply my knowledge to the workplace. You will keep a document of everything you achieve in your work placement journal, which is great for seeing how far you’ve come!”

What is the best thing about studying a T Level?

Students enjoy lots of things about studying a T Level. From gaining work experience to being confident about the steps T Levels can lead onto, you will work alongside like-minded students to secure your future.

Libby said: “My favourite part of my course is the variety of experiences it offers. You get to connect with so many people, through work, your tutors and guest speakers. It’s also a great chance to learn outside of the classroom allowing you understand many different approaches.”

Advice for students interested in T Levels

We asked Libby what advice she would give to any students interested in T Level courses. She said: “My biggest advice would be to find a T Level course and work placement that excites you and sparks your interest. It is much easier to stay motivated and learn more if you are genuinely passionate about the industry you are working in.”
