What is Access to HE?

You might be wondering what an Access to HE course is and how they work. An Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification that prepares people without traditional qualifications to secure a place at university.

They are one-year courses that provide you with the subject-specific knowledge and skills needed to apply for your chosen degree, as well as equip you with the academic study skills that will underpin your time at university.

When the time comes to begin applying for your chosen university course, our tutors will support you every step of the way, from using UCAS, to writing your personal statement and preparing you for interviews.

Why study an Access to HE course at Warrington & Vale Royal College?

Access to HE courses are a great way for students who have been out of education for a long time to get used to a classroom setting again. They provide a solid foundation for going on to study at university.

You will be studying alongside like-minded mature students, who all have the same goal to return to education and progress on to university.

If you are interested in studying a health or social care subject, you will benefit from learning in our Health & Social Care Academy (HSCA) which contains an independent living flat and a simulation hospital ward, fully-immersing you in, and preparing you for, the working environments that you’ll encounter on university placements. If you’re interested in studying a science course, you will have access to our laboratory and its equipment which has recently seen substantial investment.

Access to HE students also have access to our Learning Resource Centre, equipped with textbooks and modern computers.

We offer a range of Access to HE courses that will prepare you to progress on to your desired degree, including: Health Professionals, Nursing & Midwifery, Science, Social Science, Social Work and our brand-new for 2023 course - Paramedic Science.

How much does an Access to HE course cost?

As an Access to HE student, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan meaning you can study now and pay later. If you go on to complete an undergraduate degree after your Access to HE course, Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding balance owed, meaning you won’t have to pay the loan back.
