During this competition, which lasted for an intense 6-hours, judges were on the lookout for excellent quality workmanship as well as precision within the level, gauge, and plumb of their handywork. To make the competition more advanced, competitors were asked to produce a wall which incorporated dentil features and patterns, with the aim of stretching the skill sets of the students and to see how well they would do under the time constraints.
Lecturer in construction, John Murrell, noted the difficulty of the event but had confidence that Jake and Kobe would perform excellently, stating:
“This competition was not easy! The walls that they were building were of complex structure, but Jake and Kobe were well prepared and more than capable of taking on the challenge.”
Kobe, a Level 2 Brickwork Apprentice, brought home the gold, successfully winning the senior section. To mark this achievement, he was awarded a tool bag, fully equipped with professional bricklaying tools. His win also means that he has qualified for the Guild of Bricklayers National Final which is to be held at Leeds College in June. At this competition, Kobe will battle it out against students from all over the country to become the national final winner. A huge well done to both Kobe and Jake for their excellent performances representing the college at this event!
