Friends – Play for Disabled Children is a St Helens-based charity supporting families of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The charity is particularly close to Lindsey’s heart, as she is a parent to two children with additional needs.
The charity provides a safe, supportive, and non‑judgemental environment, offering opportunities such as summer trips that Lindsey’s children are able to enjoy. Speaking about her motivation, Lindsey said the charity has made a real difference to her family, providing a welcoming space where children can thrive and families feel supported.
Ultimately, it was Lindsey’s passion for caring for others that inspired her to return to education and apply for an Access to Higher Education course at Warrington & Vale Royal College. Reflecting on her experience so far, Lindsey praised the support she has received from staff.
She says: “The tutors are wonderful at Warrington & Vale Royal College. They are very personable and understanding of everyone’s circumstances. They make the sessions enjoyable, and even though the course is intense, it will all be worth it in the end.”
Lindsey has particularly enjoyed the psychological investigation modules and practical work, which have strengthened her confidence and prepared her for the next stage of her academic journey.
Returning to college was made possible with the help of financial support through the college’s bursary, which helped to cover childcare costs. This support has removed a major barrier to learning, allowing Lindsey to fully focus on her studies while ensuring her children are cared for.
Looking to the future, Lindsey is excited to be progressing to Edge Hill University where she will study Midwifery from September. She is passionate about supporting others and making a difference in healthcare, drawing on both her personal experiences and academic learning. Speaking about her journey into higher education, Lindsey added: “I can’t believe how accessible it is to go to university. The Access to HE course at Warrington & Vale Royal College has completely changed my life and shown me what’s possible.”
Lindsey’s fundraising achievement and educational journey highlight the impact of determination, community support, and accessible pathways into higher education, proving that with the right support, ambitious goals are always within reach.
