Build Your Confidence with English and Maths at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Returning to education can feel like a big step, especially if you have been out of the classroom for some time. At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we understand that it can feel daunting, but we are here to support every student on their journey.

Build Your Confidence with English and Maths

The college offers both Functional Skills and GCSE qualifications in English and maths, designed to help adults enhance their CVs, improve employability, and build confidence, or simply try something new.

Functional Skills qualifications focus on practical, real-life applications of English and maths, helping students develop the essential skills needed for everyday life and work. GCSE qualifications, on the other hand, provide a broader and more in-depth understanding of the subjects, preparing students for further study, technical courses, or university.

One of the college’s success stories is Charlotte Howman, an Access to HE: Allied Health Professionals student. Charlotte enrolled on the Level 2 Diploma in Health while also studying GCSE English. By gaining this qualification alongside her course, Charlotte was able to progress onto a Level 3 Diploma, and she is now set to begin university in September, where she hopes to study Paramedic Science at the University of Staffordshire.

Charlotte’s journey highlights how gaining English and maths qualifications can unlock new opportunities and open doors to further education and career progression.

Warrington & Vale Royal College, which operates across two campuses in Warrington and Winsford, is proud to offer free* English and maths courses for adults aged 19 and over. Courses starting from September include:

  • English Functional Skills
  • English GCSE
  • Maths Functional Skills
  • Maths GCSE

According to the UK Government, around 8 million adults in the UK have maths skills below those expected of a primary school child, which can limit access to higher-level study and well-paid employment. The college is committed to supporting the local community in gaining these essential qualifications, which are required by many employers and universities.

Improving English and maths skills can also make a real difference in everyday life, from managing household budgets and paying bills to supporting children with homework. Alongside English and maths, the college offers a wide range of part-time courses for adults looking to retrain, upskill, or explore new interests. With flexible start dates throughout the year, there is something to suit everyone.
