Level 3 Military & Emergency Services student, Ewan Scott, on applying for the Marines

Aspiring Marine, Ewan Scott, knew from an early age he wanted to join the armed forces. With family in the military and a strong passion for the industry, he knew the Marines would be the right fit for him.

Upon finishing his GCSE’s at Penketh High School, Ewan decided to enrol on the Level 3 Military & Emergency Services course at Warrington & Vale Royal College in order to gain a qualification before beginning his journey to the Marines.

He chose his course after hearing from other students who had studied here, and the practical aspect particularly appealed to him.

Speaking to Ewan about the application process, he said “My tutors have been so supportive of my application. The physical prep and fitness tests we have been doing in class have been very similar to those I have done for the Marines. The application process is long but I am really enjoying it.”

Following the initial application and security clearance, Ewan took part in an aptitude assessment, which tested his maths, English, electrical and mechanical skills as well as his work rate. He has recently completed the next stage of the process, which involved a formal interview.

The next steps he will have to take are a 1 day fitness test at the Royal Marines base, followed by a 3 day course which involves a combination of tests including fitness, swimming and obstacle courses. Once successful, he will have to complete 32 weeks of training before becoming a qualified Marine.

Ewan would love to be part of the boarding team in the Marines, working on navy ships and intercepting vessels as part of the Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIOPs). He eventually has hopes of achieving Corporal status so he can take on the rewarding task of training new recruits.

We wish Ewan the best of luck with the rest of his application process and can’t wait to see what he achieves next.
