Meet Lynn, 51, a passionate cook who has spent much of her life dedicated to helping others, but has recently returned to what she loves most – being in the kitchen.
Lynn’s journey began after leaving school, when she discovered a love for cooking whilst at another college. She quickly realised that this wasn’t just a passion, but a natural talent. A few years later, Lynn found herself volunteering at a drug rehabilitation centre, where she helped residents develop basic cooking skills on a budget. This experience inspired Lynn to train as a drug counsellor, and for the next 25 years, she worked with drug-dependent individuals in Liverpool, offering support and guidance.
However, last year, after a fulfilling career, Lynn felt her professional path come to a natural end. Eager to reignite her passion for cooking, she decided to return to college and take up a new challenge in the kitchen.
Living locally in Newton-le-Willows, Lynn had previously enrolled on a couple of evening courses and so when she saw the Level 2 Patisserie & Confectionery course come up, it immediately caught her eye. The timing felt right and this was the opportunity she had been waiting for! Lynn’s only initial hesitation was how she would afford the course. Fortunately, as a resident of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and with a part-time job, she qualified for funding, which made the decision much easier. She was thrilled to learn there was a place available and that the course fees could be subsidised.
Now, five weeks into the course, Lynn is loving every moment. She says: “I’m really enjoying being back in the kitchen. I’d say to other people to have a look at the college's courses and see what’s for you! I’m really enjoying it.”
