Marjorie Sherry celebrates excellent GCSE maths grade

It’s never too late to return to education and add a new qualification to your belt, as proven by countless adult students at Warrington & Vale Royal College each year.

Marjorie Sherry

One such student is Marjorie Sherry, a recent retiree who having worked for over fifty years was looking for ways to keep her brain active. Marjorie wanted to fill her time meaningfully and so she decided to browse Warrington & Vale Royal College’s Adult Course Guide to find a suitable evening course. Having previously studied both part-time and evening courses at the college’s Winsford campus, Marjorie was interested in studying something a little different and enrolled on a short course to improve her maths.

Having enjoyed meeting the younger members of her class and being encouraged by her tutor, Julie, Marjorie began to explore the possibility of taking her maths GCSE – an opportunity that was not presented to her during her time in secondary education. Marjorie embraced the challenge, learning how to use a scientific calculator and using a laptop provided by the college to study at home. Marjorie made a real effort to attend every class but found it incredibly helpful that tutors sent work home on the rare occasion that she was unable to attend.

Encouragement from her classmates and her wonderful tutor meant that the days quickly turned into weeks and before Marjorie knew it, she was sitting her GCSE exam. When Results Day finally arrived, Marjorie was overjoyed to tell all those who had supported her that she had passed with an excellent grade. None of this would have been possible, she says, had she not been able to study at the college’s Winsford campus and without the help, patience and encouragement of her tutor and other college staff. Now, Marjorie is hoping to begin studying British Sign Language at the college and is encouraging many people she knows to use the excellent facilities in Winsford.

Could this be you? We are enrolling now for a range of adult courses starting soon in Winsford, including GCSE English and maths.
